Mother's Day
We're excited to be launching our whole school Mothers' Day celebration next Friday 12 May. We will be hosting a breakfast from 7:45am followed by a whole school liturgy in the BBC from 8:40am and then visits to our classes until 10:30am.
We will not be holding a raffle this year but instead hope that our Mums and Grandmas will be able to join us for this celebration.
School Feedback Surveys
Townsville Catholic Education is working with all schools within the Diocese to improve the education experience provided to our students. As a way to gain this feedback, all staff and families within our school communities will be sent a survey to shape the future directions of our schools.
Your responses are very important in this process as we continue to strive to provide the best educational, social, spiritual and emotional resources and environment for our children.
The surveys will be distributed via email on Wednesday 10 May and we ask that they are completed by Wednesday 31 May. If you have children and/or work at more than one Catholic school, you will receive a survey for each school.
I would like to thank you in advance for providing feedback and assisting us to improve our school.
Leave
I will be going on Long Service and Sabbatical Leave from 19 May and returning at the commencement of Term 3 on 10 July. During my absence Mrs Maxine Nolan will be the Acting Principal. The role of Assistant Principal Administration to cover Maxine for this 5 week period is currently being advertised.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Sacramental Program
Last week we congratulated our students who participated in the 2023 Parish Sacramental Program. Here are some lovely photo’s of our children on their special day – Harriet, Kelly, Dante, Calum, Georgia, Averley and Punapa.
Thank you to the wonderful teachers, Ms Nelson, Ms Bradbury, Mrs Aili and Ms Turley who prepared our young participants to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion.
Good Shepherd Sunday – 7 th May 2022
Last Sunday was a very important
Sunday as it is ‘Good Shepherd
Sunday’.
In the Gospel for Sunday, Jesus
reminds us that He is the Good
Shepherd who died for His flock. Those
who stay with Him will have eternal life.
“I am the good shepherd,”
says the Lord;
I know my sheep and
mine know me.”
-John 10:14
In the reading, Jesus offers His unwavering love and support to us as our Shepherd,
but He also wants us to return this gift to Him by offering this same unwavering
commitment to one another.
Reflect, today, how well you imitate the Good Shepherd. Where you are lacking, let
Him shepherd you so that you may shepherd others. Run to the Good Shepherd
and trust in His perfect love for you.

Can We Contact You?
There are many reasons why someone from the school may need to phone you during the day, and it is vitally important that we are able to contact you when needed.
Please ensure you advise the office of any change in details, including daytime phone numbers, home addresses and family relationships (eg if parents split, daytime contacts for both). It is also important that emergency contacts are updated and that they are aware you have listed them as a contact, as these are our next option if you cannot be contacted.
Some parents block, or routinely reject calls from, the school telephone number. This can be
problematic, particularly if we are trying to contact you in the event of illness or injury. In some
cases where we are unable to contact any parents or carers, we are required to advise the
Townsville Catholic Education Student Protection team, who may involve other agencies.
Please ensure your contact details, and those of your emergency contacts, are up-to-date.
Rumours and Innuendo
A child gets called to the office, and the whispers start.
“I heard she yelled at a teacher!”
“No, I heard she pushed someone on the playground yesterday.”
“She’s going to get in big trouble!”
People are naturally curious. Many are creative and natural storytellers. While these can be great
qualities, they can also lead to rumours and innuendo being spread throughout the school
community. As a result, people can jump to conclusions about others, or label them without
knowing the full story.
As parents, it is important that we model being “rumour stoppers” and not spread rumours or jump to conclusions about others. The Big Life Journal has a great activity that highlights how to tell if something is a rumour:
If the person being talked about hears it, it would hurt their feelings.
It’s being said without being known if it is true.
Rumours are someone else’s business not yours.
You can help stop rumours by responding to them in a calm, kind way with phrases such as” “You
don’t have proof of that”, “stop spreading rumours”, “let’s hear their side of the story” or “that’s not your story to share”. Before repeating information about someone, always stop and think about how you would feel if someone was talking that way about you or your children.
For more information about how to be a “rumour stopper”, and lots of other strategies about raising resilient, confident children, visit https://biglifejournal.com/.

What's Happening In Year 6
It was an action packed first term for us all in Yr 6. Our students worked exceptionally hard to establish efficient working routines and are doing us proud, following the GSCS Way. Our students enjoyed participating in the swimming carnival, where many students went on to represent our school in the interschool swimming competition, where they ranked 4th overall. Many of our students also participated in an inter school Hockey competition, and many of our students finished the term by participating in the NQ Netball Cup and the Bill Nettle Rugby Cup.
This term our students were excited to see Mr Bluck return to GSCS, as our special guest at our ANZAC Day assembly, and then went on to participate in our school’s fun run/cross country, where they all tried their best. During these past few weeks, each class has had a visit with our PAL’s in Prep A, and look forward to working with them through the remainder of the year. We are fortunate to have soccer specialist coaches visit with us each Thursday during sporting schools, where our students have been learning and honing their skills. We have more inter school sporting competitions coming up throughout the term that we are looking forward to, and are confident that all that choose to participate will enjoy themselves.
