NAPLAN
NAPLAN Testing for our Year 3 and 5 students commenced this morning. Today our students participated in their Writing Tests. Tomorrow they will complete their Reading Test, on Monday they will complete their Language Conventions Test and on Tuesday they will complete their Numeracy Test. We wish them all the best.
Prep Open Day
We will be holding a Prep Open Day for prospective 2024 Prep students next Tuesday 21 March. This is an opportunity for prospective students and families to explore our Prep area, meet our staff and participate in a range of activities. We will have Melville's Animal Farm and a face painter on site as well as a coffee van for the adults. Our Year 6 Leaders will also be conducting school tours.
If you have a child commencing Prep in 2024 or know of someone who does, we look forward to having you visit and spend time with us on the 21st.
Survey Request - Why Families Choose Catholic Schooling
The Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) is conducting an important survey with parents and carers about the Catholic education system in Queensland. QCEC would appreciate your feedback via a short online survey to gain a better understanding of the factors that influence families in choosing a Catholic school. QCEC are working with Market & Communications Research and the Online Research Unit to compile feedback. You can complete the survey online through this Survey Link. All responses are anonymous. The survey closes Monday 20 March. Thanks in advance for your contribution.
Parent Information Session - Zones of Regulation
Next Wednesday 22 March Lena Hewitt, our Guidance Counsellor, will be running a Parent Information Session on Zones of Regulation. Zones is a common language that is used across Good Shepherd to assist students in regulating their emotions. The session will be held in the Staffroom at the commencement of the school day. We hope you can join us.

PROJECT COMPASSION – Tereesa’s Story
Australia
Tereesa is a Gamilaroi woman from Western Sydney who struggled with homelessness while raising her four children. Through the Baabayn Young Mums and Bubs Group, Tereesa was able to reconnect with her culture and create a better future for her children.
Tereesa felt disconnected from her culture and at just 16 years old, she had to leave school after becoming pregnant with her first child. A single mother struggling with homelessness, Tereesa’s only concern was finding stability for her children.
“I was homeless. I didn’t have a place to call home…my kids never had a connection to the community,” Tereesa said. Through Baabayn, Tereesa was also able to hear stories from Indigenous Elders and reconnect with her culture. Already an aspiring artist, Tereesa was able to flourish at Baabayn as she learnt Indigenous artwork and symbols.
Seeking a better future for her children, Tereesa joined Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation’s Young Mums and Bubs Group, supported by Caritas Australia. Baabayn helped Tereesa access housing for her family and psychological support. Tereesa now works at Baabayn, providing support to young mothers and mentoring the next generation of young people.

Story Dogs
We are excited to announce that some of our year 2 students will be taking part in the Story Dogs program, beginning on Thursday this week.
Story Dogs involves selected students reading to a trained dog and handler. When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing! It is a non-judgemental setting, the children’s focus improves, their literacy skills increase and their confidence soars. The accepting, loving nature of the dog helps children relax, open up, try harder and have fun while reading. Following each session, the handler also provides written feedback to classroom teachers.
As part of our commitment to Story Dogs, we have agreed that there will be no other dogs on site on Thursdays (even Franki will be staying home on Thursdays!). We do not anticipate this being an issue, as most parents and carers are aware that they are not to bring a dog on to school grounds. This includes puppies who are carried in your arms or a bag.
Changes to Naplan Reporting
Our Year 3 and 5 students are joining students across Australia this week and next to complete the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which provides information on how Australian students are performing in reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar and numeracy.
Th QCAA is responsible for administering and reporting on NAPLAN in Queensland.
As part of the National School Reform Agreement, changes are being made to how Naplan results are reported, with a proficiency standard being introduced. The new proficiency standard has four levels of achievement for each year level and replaces the
previous 10-band structure and the national minimum standard used across the four domains.
The four levels of achievement are:
• Exceeding
• Strong
• Developing
• Needs additional support.
From 2023, the individual student report (ISR) will change. The ISR will be based on the four
levels of achievement. It will also continue to show the national average, the range of
achievement for the middle 60% of students in each year level, and a dot placement for the
student comparing their achievement against these measures.
This new standard and its benchmarks will provide information to parents/carers and teachers
about what a student can do against a challenging but reasonable standard of literacy and
numeracy expected for students at the time of the tests.
This change to reporting means that a new time series and a resetting of the measurement scale
will commence in 2023, allowing the full benefit of the new online adaptive testing to be reflected
in student results. Results from 2008–2022 cannot be directly compared with the 2023 results.
Good Shepherd's NAPLAN schedule is as follows.
Catch up sessions will be held until 27 March for students who are absent (except for writing). While these are available, the preference is for ALL participating students to complete the test in the first scheduled timeslot. For this reason, please try and avoid family holidays and days off during this period unless the student is sick.
