THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
- Community - I connect and engage
- Compassion - I show care and concern for others
- Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
- Hope - I see good all around me
- Inclusion - I involve and accept others
- Justice - I make right choices
- Love - I share my good heart with others
- Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
- Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
- Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on Reconciliation.
Mini Vinnie’s have their last visit to Parklands this Saturday 26th November.
Visiting the residents at Parklands is a real highlight of being a Mini Vinnies. The students enjoy spending time with the ladies and gentlemen just as much as the residents appreciate the visits. I would still like to thank ALL our Mini Vinnies for your enthusiastic participation this year!
Thank you to the families who have already sent in items for the class Christmas hampers. Please continue to send these items in.
This activity is a great way to involve our students in a real act of service to others in this up and coming Christmas period and reminds us all that Christmas is a time of giving to others.

SCHOOL TV SPECIAL REPORT: Surviving Christmas
As families around the world prepare to celebrate Christmas by decorating their homes, singing carols, buying gifts and planning feasts, often the true meaning of Christmas can be lost due the
commercial exploitation of this time of year. Many people see it as a joyous occasion to spend with family and friends, but for others it is viewed as a stressful and challenging time caused by a combination of things such as financial pressures, relationship issues, and quite often, loneliness.
Parents often feel pressured to buy lots of presents and to have a huge Christmas celebration and a
Christmas break jam-packed with activities. What children will remember though, is time spent
together, being surrounded by love. Rather than dishing out hundreds of dollars on the latest “must have” gifts or filling the calendar with expensive activities, consider:
Stick to the 5 gift rule: something you want, something you need; something to wear,
something to read, something to do.
Make and print a book of vouchers for things like a favourite meal or a movie that can be
“cashed in” between different set dates (this helps with budgeting, as not all treats are used
at once);
Encourage creativity by giving sets that can be used to make something else eg a jar with all
the ingredients to make a cake, or “make your own” kits
Arranging an adventure day or scavenger with a good friend at a local park, finishing with a
picnic
Rather than buying new clothes which are quickly grown out of, arranging a swap meet with
a group of friends. Everyone brings their unwanted clothes and takes something “new”
home
Sign them up to the local library – they have an endless supply of books, magazines and
movies which can be borrowed for free.
Buy gifts that the whole family can use, or that will encourage time spent together (such as
board games or sports equipment).
For family and friends, try gifting practical things that involve giving of your time, rather than lots of money:
Mow someone’s yard for them
Bake a cake and deliver it
Offer to babysit or do the ironing
Give someone an at-home spa day – a facemask (look up recipes online for make-at-home
masks), a manicure and pedicure while chatting with a good friend can do wonders!
Offer to be photographer for the day - take family photos for someone and give them one
print (or they can print them) along with the digital images.
More tips about surviving Christmas click here or go to SchoolTV under the “students” tab on the
Good Shepherd home page.
Glasses collection
Thank you to all those people who sent in prescription glasses and sunglasses that they no longer need. We were able to donate 80 pairs to YWAM on assembly last Friday. Those glasses will be distributed in Papua New Guinea, where two out of three people need assistance with their eyesight, but specialist care is very difficult to access.

What's Happening In Our Year 3 Classes?
Year 3 have been working hard to finalise their portrait artworks for their Art Showcase this week. The students have created 4 portrait artworks. They looked at the artworks of Hanoch Piven and Picasso to create portraits based on these artists' work. The students also created exaggerated artworks of teachers as well as digital portraits of themselves.

Environmental News
Vinegar is cheap, it's useful, and people have been using it for years. Vinegar kills 99% of bacteria and more than 80% of mold and germs. It's non-toxic, safe, and good for the environment. It's also extremely affordable compared to all the household cleaners on the market. Mix Vinegar with water to make a natural and safe cleaning spray.
