2023 Classes

Planning for our 2023 classes was finalised late yesterday. Thank you to Townsville Catholic Education for financially supporting an additional teacher for us. Our student numbers were lending us to have two very large Year 4 classes and two very large Year 5 classes. We have been financially supported for an additional teacher across these two year levels. In 2023 our class break up will be:

  • 3 x Prep classes
  • 3 x Year 1 classes
  • 3 x Year 2 classes
  • 3 x Year 3 classes
  • 5 x Year 4/5 classes
  • 2 x Year 6 classes

We are very excited to be offering Year 4/5 classes. Research indicates many advantages to multi-year classes including the ability for children to mix socially and academically with a wide range of students and children being able to work at their own rate with a community of learners and are able to learn from and with each other. We are very excited to be housing our five classes in the current Year 5 and 6 area of our school (I and J Blocks).

We are finalising the appointment of our additional teacher and will advise our school community next week of what teachers are teaching what classes.

Disco

This Friday night we are hosting a Disco. Thanks to Mrs Herrod and her band of helpers for organising this event for our school community.

Transition Day

Our whole school Transition Day will be held on Tuesday 29 November. Information about the day is attached below. Our class teachers will be finalised and our students will have the opportunity to spend the day with their 2023 teacher.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY

The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:

  • Community - I connect and engage
  • Compassion - I show care and concern for others
  • Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
  • Hope - I see good all around me
  • Inclusion - I involve and accept others
  • Justice - I make right choices
  • Love - I share my good heart with others
  • Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
  • Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
  • Stewardship - I care for all of creation

Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.

This week we are focusing on Love.

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:40

Glasses
What do you do with your old glasses when you get a new pair? If you’re anything like me, they get shoved in a random cupboard, where they seem to accumulate very quickly, especially if multiple family members wear glasses. If you have a hidden pile of old or unwanted glasses – bring them in to school!
As part of our National Recycling Week activities, we have been collecting old and unwanted eyeglasses. These will be donated to YWAM, who will distribute them to people throughout Papua New Guinea via their medical ships.
Representatives from YWAM will be at our assembly on Friday 18 November to collect the donation. Please drop any reading, prescription, or sunglasses into the office by end of school on Thursday.

Thank you for your support!

Reports
Semester 2 reports will be released on Compass in Week 9. Please check that you can log on to the Parent Portal so that you can access you child’s reports.
If you are unable to access the Parent Portal, please contact the office.

What's Happening In Our Year 4 Classes?

This term as part of their English and HASS assessment students have been looking at sustainability. Each child has chosen an environmental school project and written an action plan of how it can be implemented. The English component of the task was to write a persuasive text to explain why and how their project will improve our environmental stewardship. Our Science unit has focused on the properties of different packaging materials and their impact on the environment. The Technology element was to design an environmentally friendly package that would safely deliver a fragile item. Students have been involved in a number of hands-on-activities to examine the properties of a variety of materials. Strength and durability, water resistance, absorbency and malleability are some of the properties that students tested.

Be a good gardener – leaves, grass clippings and other shredded garden waste spread over soil inhibits weed growth and retains moisture, which means you have to water less.
