From the Desk of the Principal
It's been a huge few days here at Good Shepherd.
Our Year 5 students had a wonderful camp to Gumburu, Paluma last week. I had the pleasure of joining them on Thursday for a creek walk and high rope experience. I'm confident the students returned with lots of stories to tell and memories to share. Thanks again to Mrs Bradbury, Mrs Aili, Ms Ellis, Mr Bluck and Mr Moore for their work in ensuring our students had a fabulous time.
Friday was a sea of RED as we reminded our students of the importance of Recognising, Reacting and Reporting on Day for Daniel.
Our Preps to Year 2 students have commenced their swimming lessons at Kylie's Swim School. They had three lessons this week and will conclude with another three lessons next week.
We are finalising our 2023 Staffing information and organising our Transition Day to be held on Tuesday 29 November. This is a day for all current and new students to spend the day with their 2023 classmates and teachers. More information will be sent home soon.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Each year at Good Shepherd we help the St Vincent de Paul chapter for the ministerial Region of the Good Shepherd to provide disadvantaged families within our area with a Christmas hamper to help them celebrate Christmas. This year the chapter has asked for specific items to go into each hamper so that all families receive a True Christmas Hamper. Each class is asked to assemble a hamper with the following donated items over the coming weeks. (See list below). Please send your donated items in with your child to add to the hampers in their classrooms. Starting Monday 7th November.
This is a great way to involve the students in a real act of service to others in this up-and-coming Christmas period and reminds us all that Christmas is a time of giving to others. It helps us remember that some people in our community don’t have enough money to have a nice Christmas dinner like so many of us enjoy.
Thank you for your support of this very worthy appeal

THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on Inclusion.
"I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." John 13:34

Raising Boys
Neuroscience and brain mapping has over the years helped researchers gain a clearer understanding into the distinct development of the male brain. In their reports on raising boys, SchoolTV’s panel of experts say that when comparing male and female brains, it is necessary to take into consideration the psychology of differences. There are many reasons for these including hormonal, physical, environmental, and of course, brain differences.
However, these should not translate into limitations or affect how a parent acts towards their child, nor should it influence how you treat them. It's no secret that most boys are active, loud, rambunctious and prone to rough play, but you need to be careful not to pigeon-hole your child into sex-specific behaviours as there is a big cross-over. Boys should not be considered all the same as they do have individual differences.
SchoolTV has a series of articles and videos, “Raising Boys”, which address the issues faced by boys in today’s society. To access them, click the link below or go to SchoolTV under the “Students” tab on our Good Shepherd home page.
Slow Down!
A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who are behaving safely in our school pickup zone, moving forward in the zone and walking across the carpark to collect students rather than calling for them to run across the carpark.
One thing that has come to my attention, is the speed at which some cars drive through the carpark, particularly later in the morning after the bell has rung. Please remember there could still be people moving around the carpark, including parents with toddlers who are leaving the grounds after dropping students at school.
All drivers are asked to please maintain a safe, slow speed through the carpark regardless of the time of day. Keeping our students, their families and our staff, safe is everyone’s responsibility!
Franki Portrait Competition
Congratulations to all the amazing young artists in Prep to Year 2, who took time to draw a portrait of Franki for the Book Week “Paws for Thought” competition. There were so many fantastic entries and the judges found it very difficult to choose. The following were the portraits done by the year level winners:

What's Happening In Our Year 2 Classes?
Year 2 students this term have been studying Push and Pull forces as part of their Science unit and went on a scavenger hunt. In Maths the children used the book Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins to learn about positional words and practise their mapping skills. For our English unit the children have busily been writing their persuasives comparing George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl and The Jar of Happiness by Alisa Burrows.
