From the Desk of the Principal

We are super excited to see our Junior Playground being installed! Once the workmen complete installation, we still have to add edging and new sand. We are hoping this will be completed by the end of next week and thank you all in advance for your patience with this project - it has definitely been worth the wait!

I have been away for the first half of this week attending Principal Meetings. On Monday we spent time exploring Townsville Catholic Education's Strategic Directions and how these relate to our Annual School Improvement Plans and on Tuesday Mrs Nolan joined me in a day focusing on Learning and Teaching. Mrs Nolan and I also had the opportunity to further examine our 2022 NAPLAN data. Today Mrs Kershaw also joined Mrs Nolan and I at the Townsville Catholic Education School Law Conference.

I am looking forward to returning to school tomorrow and checking out the new Junior Playground! Enjoy the rest of your week.

Mission Mini Fete

A very big thank you to our students, staff, and community for their support of our annual Mission Mini Fete. A lot of hard work and preparation was put in and the results were a fun afternoon had by everyone. To top it off the fete raised $2072.35 to donate to Catholic Mission for their Appeal. Congratulations!

THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY

The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
•    Community - I connect and engage
•    Compassion - I show care and concern for others
•    Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
•    Hope - I see good all around me
•    Inclusion - I involve and accept others
•    Justice - I make right choices
•    Love - I share my good heart with others
•    Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
•    Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
•    Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.

This week we are focusing on Endeavour.

“But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”   Matthew 19:26

Break Fast Club Donations

The Good Shepherd Breakfast Club is held EVERY morning at 8:10am-8:25am in the shelter shed. The Breakfast Club has had a great response from the students and school community.

As you know breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it helps students to concentrate and focus on their learning.  Toast will be available free of charge for all students. The Woolworths at Rasmussen are kindly donating bread for the program on a weekly basis.  We thank them for their generosity and support.

To keep the program going in our school, we are asking families if they could assist by donating a spread or more for the toast (jar of vegemite, jar of jam and squeeze honey if possible) this term. All donations are gratefully received and can be left at the Office.

Book Fair Art

In the lead up to this week’s “Paws for Books” Book Fair, students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2, drew portraits of our school wellbeing dog, Franki.

Their artwork and attention to detail is amazing – make sure to check them out when you visit Book Fair in the Library.

All portraits have been entered in the Book Fair competition, with winners to be announced at assembly on Friday.

Here is a sneak peek of some of the wonderful entries on display in the library:

School Transitions

With just a few weeks of the 2022 school year left, many students are starting to wonder about next year. This is particularly true for students in year 6, who will be transitioning to high school, with worries about making new friends, getting used to different teachers and finding their way around among the most common concerns.

At Good Shepherd, teachers and support staff work with students to help prepare them for the transition, and most local high schools also host transition days.

SchoolTV also offers a host of great information about transitioning to high school, aimed at both parents and students. Topics covered include how stressful it is to move from primary to secondary school, how to approach the increase in homework, practical advice for starting secondary school, and a mother’s perspective on starting high school.

To access the full collection of resources about school transitions, please click the link below, or go to SchoolTV under the “students” tab on the Good Shepherd home page.

What's Happening In Our Year 1 Classes?

Year 1 have had a very productive start to the Term. We are learning how to write Information Reports, on various Australian animals, and to help with our fact finding, we went on an excursion to Billabong Sanctuary. The students learnt lots of facts about wombats, cassowaries, crocodiles, koalas and pythons. The students will now learn the difference between facts and opinions, and how to research some facts on Australian animals.

Another highlight of the excursion was the bus journey, as this was a new experience for many of the students. All students should be commended for their outstanding behaviour throughout the day. Thank you to all the parent helpers that made this day run smoothly.
