From the Desk of the Principal
We are close to the end of the term and many of our classes are showcasing their wonderful work from throughout the term. Don't forget to pop in and check out the Year 1 Art Show that is being held in the BBC and is open before and after school each day this week.
Thank you to our families and friends who joined us for our Big Mob Brekkie yesterday. A special thanks to our Deadly Team of Marita, Adeleah, Colleen, Emma and Melisia for organising this wonderful event for our families.
Tomorrow the Great Book Swap is being held to assist in raising money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We are also encouraging students to wear yellow to school for R U Ok? Day. At first break tomorrow we are also launching "Talk It Out Thursday" - a boys group where boys in Years 4, 5 and 6 are encouraged to pop in and have chats with Mr Bluck, Mr Kershaw and Mr Jason.
Good luck to our students competing at the Cricket Blast today as well as our Rugby League Team competing in the Obe Geia Challenge on Palm Island this Friday. Enjoy the rest of your week.

R U Ok? Day – Thur 8th September
The aim of R U OK? Day is to engage Australians to connect with people in the community they may have concerns about, encouraging them to seek further help and to follow up to ensure support is being provided. R U OK? Day encourages responsible public discussion of social isolation and its negative consequences such as suicide. The key message is that social connectedness and positive help seeking can assist people in crisis and is a whole of community responsibility.
- The objectives of the project are to:
Promote awareness of mental health and suicide and encourage Australians to reach out to those at risk in their community - Generate constructive discussion about issues such as depression, rural isolation, mental illness, indigenous dislocation, bullying, body image, sexuality and financial stress
- Raise the profile of organisations and charities that provide support and care to people, families and communities affected by suicide or at risk.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on Service.
‘For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom
for many.’ Mark 10:45

Quest for Knowledge 2022
On Thursday, four of our Year 6 students – Ethan, Isabella, Mackenzie and Moraes, will take on 15 other schools in the 2022 Quest for Knowledge (QFK22).
Dubbed “The Miracle Workers", the team will need to answer questions from 12 different knowledge areas, with 20 questions in each round to be completed in a set time. The competition is held online and run through a Google Classroom format.
Under the guidance of Mrs Aili, students have also participated in practise rounds which have allowed them to become familiar with the competition format and the style of questions which will be asked during the competition rounds. The QFK judges provided feedback on the team responses, which the students have taken on board as part of their competition preparation.
Good luck “The Miracle Workers” – I am sure you will do us proud!
Reflective Practice Day
Last Friday students had a day off school, but staff were all here attending professional development sessions.
Our school officers took part in a range of in-services around various disabilities, with the aim of adding to their knowledge and strategies for further supporting students with a range of learning needs.
Teachers took part in an information session run by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) about the Australian Curriculum version 9. This latest version will be implemented fully in 2025.
Teachers also completed professional development sessions around excellence in the teaching of writing, which is a major focus for Townsville Catholic Education in 2022 and 2023. Several year levels have been participating in targeted writing activities this year, and these will be rolled out across the school next year.

What's Happening In Our Year 4 Classes?
Our Science unit this term, gave students the opportunity to explore how natural processes and human activity cause changes to the Earth’s surface. They looked at soils, rocks and landscapes, how they change over time and the factors that affect the erosion of soils. To demonstrate their understanding students were given a simplified map of the local area and asked to decide where to bury a time capsule so it won’t be damaged and can be located in fifty years time. Students had to give scientific reasons for/against each of the areas on the map. The students really enjoyed getting up close with a magnifying glass and seeing the elements that make up the different soils and rocks. Many of the students were prompted to bring in rock samples from home as well as borrow books on the topic from the Library. We may have some budding Geologists in the Yr 4 cohort.
During History this term the Year 4 students have been learning about events in Britain in the 18th century and life for people who committed crimes during this time. Students have been exposed to stories of the First Fleet, including reasons for the journey, who travelled to Australia, and their experiences. To enhance their learning, the students were required to use a database to collect information about a convict on board the First Fleet. Using historical knowledge and their imaginations, students took on the role of their chosen convict and wrote journal entries about the journey on board their ship to the new colony in Australia. Students were encouraged to include some dates, places, sounds, looks, feelings and smells. Some students expressed relief to travel to a new other country but most students wrote about the fear of the unknown and loss of family contact.
