From the Desk of the Principal
We have passed the halfay mark of the term! Time really does fly when you're having fun.
Our Friday Assembly continues to be a wonderful opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements of our students. Each week we acknowledge our students who have followed The GSCS Way by selecting three students to sit at the VIP Table with Sherlock. We also recognise our students who have been awarded the Student of the Week or have displayed the Gospel in Action by following The Good Shepherd Way. At last Friday's Assembly we also acknowledged our students who were placegetters at the Interschool Athletics Carnival. A special congratulations to Beau Sutton (100m) and Layne Ketchup (100m, 200m, 800m and Long Jump) who have been selected in the Townsville Team to compete at the NQ Trials. We wish both Beau and Layne all the best.
I am away from today until Friday attending Principal Meetings. I will return to school on Monday. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Mini Vinnies Parklands Visit
The next Mini Vinnies visit to Parklands Aged care Facility will be on Saturday, 17th September 9:00am-10:00am.
Please remember the following conditions stipulated by Parklands:
- Parents are no longer allowed to stay during the visit.
- ALL students need to complete the Covid Immunisation form for each visit.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on Justice.
“And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ (Matthew 25:40-45)
To keep the program going in our school, we are asking families if they could assist by donating a spread or more for the toast (vegemite, jam and squeeze honey if possible) this term. All donations are gratefully received and can be left at the Office.

Parking Reminder
A number of parents have been dropping their children off, and collecting them, from the area in front of the office and Prep classrooms. Please note that this area is strictly for people with a disability parking permit and buses.
Please drop off and collect your children from the designated drop off and pick up zone only.
Online Games
Online games can be great fun for your child, but it is important that parents help children manage the risks involved with online activity.
Many games can improve your child’s coordination, problem-solving and multi-tasking skills, as well as help build social skills through online interactivity with other players. But it is also important to understand what might go wrong and could have a negative impact on your child.
According to the eSafety Commission,
• 81% of children aged 8 to 17 have played an online game
• 64% have played a multiplayer online game with others
• 52% have played with people they did not know
• 17% have experienced bullying or abuse while playing a network game with others
• 34% have made an in-game purchase and this rose to 45% when they played a network game with others.
There are a number of ways you can help create a safer gaming environment for your child, starting with locating the computer or games console in an open area of your home. For children who play on a handheld device, insist they play in the family room, lounge, or other communal area.
Up to date security software on all devices to protect against viruses, malware, and other online threats, and activating parental controls and safety features on the device or in the app/browser can also help.
For detailed information about how to protect your child while they play online games, go to the eSafety Commission website by clicking the link below. This page is for parents and carers. It covers:
• How to create a safer gaming environment for your child
• Is your child spending too much time gaming?
• Grooming and bullying through in-game chat
• Limiting in-game purchases
• Games with gambling themes

What's Happening In Our Year 5 Classes?
Term 3 is soon coming to an end and students are beginning to commence assessment for their different learning areas.
At the beginning of the term, Year 5 students received a visit from the Federal Member for Herbert, Mr Philip Thompson OAM, who spoke about Australia’s democracy and parliament as part of our current learning on civics and citizenship.
A number of students attended Red Track in Week 5 and participated in various events; many for the first time. Each student proudly represented Good Shepherd Catholic School and should be commended for their efforts and fantastic sportsmanship.
August 8 marked the feast day of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. To commemorate this occasion, Year 5 students led a liturgy with their Prep PALS and showcased their developing leadership skills. This is very pleasing to see, particularly as they begin to transition into Year 6.
We have continued to meet with our Mary Mackillip Kinder PALS this term. Our students have really enjoyed modelling to many future students of our school how to both correctly borrow books and conduct buddy reading.
Students are getting excited for Book Week 2022 and we look forward to seeing their costumes at next week’s Book Week Parade on Thursday.
