From the Desk of the Principal
Thank you so much to our wonderful Good Shepherd Family for your raising a phenomenal $21,672 in our first ever fundraising fun run. Congratulations to Kahlo who was our highest fundraiser raising $615. Well done also to 1C who were our highest fundraising class raising $2,399.
A huge thank you also to our Deadly Team for organising some wonderful activities for our students and community during NAIDOC Week. The Colouring In Competition was a huge success. Congratulations to winners - Marcus (Prep), Colton (Year 1), Kathain (Year 2), Sophia (Year 3), Hudson (Year 4), Lucas (Year 5) and Jonathan (Year 6). These students each received a special prize at Friday's Assembly.
This week we are celebrating Catholic Education Week. The theme is "Communities of Faith, Hope, Love". Our classes are participating in Acts of Kindness and are collecting items for Ronald McDonald House, making cards for the residents of Good Shepherd Nursing Home, writing appreciation letters and much more. On Monday I attended the Catholic Education Week Mass at the Cathedral with Mrs Kershaw and our school captains Paige and Thomas.
Today and tomorrow we have a number of students competing at the Challenge Games at the Sports Reserve. We wish these students all the best and thank our staff for accompanying them on this wonderful experience.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Break Fast Club Donations
The Good Shepherd Breakfast Club is held EVERY morning at 8:10am-8:25am in the shelter shed. The Breakfast Club has had a great response from the students and school community.
As you know breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it helps students to concentrate and focus on their learning. Toast will be available free of charge for all students. The Woolworths at Rasmussen are kindly donating bread for the program on a weekly basis. We thank them for their generosity and support.
To keep the program going in our school, we are asking families if they could assist by donating a spread or more for the toast (vegemite, jam and squeeze honey if possible) this term. All donations are gratefully received and can be left at the Office.
Catholic Education Week
24th – 30th July 2022
This week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. On Monday, Ms Scrase, Mrs Kershaw and our school captains – Paige and Thomas joined the representatives from other Catholic Schools in our diocese at a special Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Our school celebrates alongside all 309 Catholic schools in Queensland. This year the theme is ‘Communities of Faith, Hope and Love’.
One of our school’s priority is to educate our students in the teachings of the Catholic faith and what it means to be an active member of the community.

Students often arrive at school tired, and parents often lament how hard it is to get their children to bed on time, or up and ready for school in the morning. From time to time, students fall asleep in class, or come to the office for a nap!
According to the Sleep Health Foundation most sleep problems in children are linked with difficult behaviour around bedtime. Children may have had these problems from a young age, or they can start after a change such as being sick, moving house, a holiday, family upsets or going back to school.
Unfortunately, these problems in children can impact on other members of the household, disturbing the sleep of parents and other children. It will also mean that they don’t function as well during the day.
The good news is that parents can help solve these problems, and children can learn behaviours that help them get a good night’s sleep.
The Sleep Health Foundation offers the following questions and answers:
What are some common behavioural sleep problems in children?
The most common issues are: not getting into bed; not settling into sleep; not staying in their own bed; waking up at night; getting up in the morning and / or not getting enough sleep.
What can you do to get your child into bed at the right time?
Set up a bedtime routine. Stick to it each night. Be consistent with it. This helps your child's body and mind to get ready for bed. They will go to sleep more easily if they go to bed at about the same time each night. They are more likely to wake at about the same time each morning as well. Parents must always be ready to be firm if their child acts up around bedtime.
What is a bedtime routine?
It is best to start with a 30-to-60-minute quiet time. Keep your child away from computers, TVs and anything else that is too stimulating. It is normal to include a bath / shower, pyjamas, a drink, cleaning teeth, a toilet visit, a bedtime story, a goodnight kiss and then lights out as parents leave the bedroom. Put limits on what you let your child do here. Don't let them stall for time. Make sure that lights are out at an appropriate time. This will give your child the sleep they need. The next day they are more likely to wake up refreshed and be better behaved.
How do you determine lights out time, so your child gets enough sleep?
Lights out time depends on sleep need (see Sleep Needs Across the Lifespan). It also depends on when they wake up. For example, if your child needs about 11 hours of sleep and has to wake up at 7am, then lights out would be at about 8pm.
How much sleep does my child need?
It is well known that as children get older they need less sleep. Different people have different sleep needs. The advice in the table below is only a guide. You can make a good guess if a person is sleeping enough at night - observe how they act and function during the day.
For more information about sleep requirements, or for help with establishing good sleep habits, go to the Sleep Health Foundation website sleepheathfoundation.org.au.

What's Happening In Our Year 6 Classes?
Year 6 have begun their exciting science unit for term 3. Throughout their unit they are looking into living organisms and their ability to adapt through different conditions. Last week they began their experiment on mould. They are testing which conditions affect the growth rate of mould forming on a piece of bread. They are testing whether being wet, moist, cold or dark affect the rate of mould growth compared to a control piece. They will be recording their observations every other day. They are so excited to see which piece of bread will get the mouldiest and who’s hypothesis is proven correct.

Environmental News
The long term vision for Catholic Schools in the Townsville Diocese includes the following key principles:
- The natural world has value in itself and not merely for its use by humans.
- Earth belongs to God and is only on loan to humans who are called to care for it.
- Ecological education provides the background for wise and moral decisions.
The right to a safe ecological environment is a universal human right.
