From the Desk of the Principal
It's been bit chilly over the last few days and families are reminded that students are required to wear our school jacket fleece available from School Locker for $32. If you are unable to purchase one of these then a navy jumper is also acceptable as are navy tights. We thank you for your continued cooperation in this matter.
We have a number of staff leaving us at the end of this term and a number of new faces commencing with us in Term 3. We will be farewelling Elle Niland (4C) and Jennifer Stevenson (Prep SO) at the end of this term. We thank Elle and Jen for their contributions to our Good Shepherd Family and wish them both well on their new adventures. In Term 3 we will welcome Amanda Christopher (Prep SO) and Adeleah Evans (Year 1 SO). Peta Borg will be taking 4C for the remainder of the year with the assistance of Alisha Ford and Saskia Brown on Fridays.
This Friday we will be holding our annual Athletics Carnival. Next Wednesday we will be holding our Semester 1 Academic Awards. We look forward to having many of our families and friends join us at both of these events. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is a religious Christian feast that is being celebrated this Thursday, June 16.
Mainly celebrated by Roman Catholics, the feast occurs in either late May or early June, on the first Thursday after Trinity Sunday (60 days after Easter).
Corpus Christi, meaning ‘the body of Christ’ in Latin, celebrates the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the actual body of Christ during Mass.
In some countries not only is the feast celebrated in mass but they also parade the streets with the consecrated wafer as a public show that the sacrifice of Christ was for the salvation of the whole world.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind!
School holidays are almost upon us, providing lots of opportunities to get outside and play. Physical activity and exercise is not only vital to a child’s overall development but it has so many other benefits.
According to SchoolTv’s Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, with children spending more time on computers being sedentary, it is even more important to encourage activity.
“Research shows, that regular physical activity and exercise lead to changes in the brain. It improves cognitive function, elevates mood, improves learning and reduces ‘stress chemicals’ like cortisol,” he said.
As well as maintaining a healthy weight, physical activity also improves concentration by helping to establish connections between different parts of the brain. It helps children develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. On an emotional level, it reduces stress and anxiety while improving posture and sleep.
“Physical activity and exercise are good for your child’s health, now and in the future. Parents should encourage their kids to move or play sport at every opportunity – in and out of school.”
SchoolTV has an excellent series of reports about the benefits of exercise. Click the below link to view it or go to SchoolTV under the Students tab on the school homepage.
Parent Portal Reminder
School reports will be released via the Compass Parent Portal next week. Paper copies will not be sent home with students, so it is important that you are able to access the Parent Portal.
If you have not already done so, please log in using the email that was sent to you a few weeks ago. If you feel you haven’t received this email, please check your computer’s “spam” folder, as some parents have found the email here.
If you have any difficulties, please contact the school office for assistance.

What's Happening In Our Year 2 Classes?
This term, we have really enjoyed learning about mealworms and their life cycles. It was fun keeping the mealworms in our classrooms as pets. Every day we watched them grow from an egg, into the larvae, then into the pupa, and finally into the darkling beetle. We have written information reports about Mealworms in the form of a poster and we will share these with everyone at our Year 2 Showcase next week.

Library News
The 2022 Regional Reader’s Cup was held at Southern Cross Catholic College on the evening of Tuesday 14 June 2022. This year Good Shepherd along with fifty-three teams from other Townsville schools and the surrounding region participated in the challenge, which is divided into three categories; Year 5/6, Year 7/8 and Year 9/10. The continued commitment by our school and others in the region to be part of this reading challenge sends a powerful message to the wider community that schools are dedicated to promoting a strong reading culture which is fundamental to raising literacy levels among our students.
Congratulations to the Good Shepherd Catholic School Reader’s Cup team, the GSCS Reading Rangers: Charlee (5A), Connah (5A), Theo (5A), Cooper (5B) and Indigo (5A).
These students are to be commended for their commitment and enthusiasm to the reading challenge over the last few months. They all share a passion for reading and learning, and worked hard to build a collaborative team that would represent our school at this regional event.
