From the Desk of the Principal
It's been another busy week of learning as we head into the final couple of weeks of the term.
This week has seen us creating hats in Prep, learning about The Last Supper in Year 1, describing Kyle Feldt using adjectives and similes in Year 3, Parent quizzes in Year 4 and cooking in Year 6. There is always lots of fun and engagement in all of our classes!
This Friday we will be holding our Athletics Field Events for our 9 to 13 years students. Next Friday 17 June will see our whole school participate in the Athletics Canrival. An approximate timetable will be published on our Facebook page later this week and in next week's newsletter.
It was wonderful to see so much maroon across our school today. Enjoy the rest of your week and Go Queensland tonight!

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost – this Sunday the 12th of June. It is a solemn celebration of the belief in the revelation of one God, yet three divine persons.
“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—these are words we use every time we pray the Sign of the Cross. Even young children know them. The prayer expresses the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, that God reveals himself in Three Persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
This is difficult for anyone to understand, especially young children. St. Patrick famously explained the Trinity by relating God in Three Persons to the shamrock. A three-leaf clover has three lobes that are unique from each other but all part of the same clover or shamrock. They are three leaves, but one leaf.
On Trinity Sunday, the Christian Church ponders with joy and thanksgiving what the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have done to accomplish the salvation of sinful humanity. It is brought to remembrance how Christians should respond to the love God has shown us, praising Him and giving Him glory. We remember the Father as our Creator, the Son as our Savior and the Holy Spirit as our Comforter.
Welcome Mass for Archbishop Charles D. Balvo Apostolic Nuncio to Australia
Myer, Ferisita and Visesio joined Ms Scrase and Mrs Kershaw at a special mass to welcome the Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Archbishop Charles D. Balvo. A number of staff and school students from our Townsville Catholic schools attended the Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. It was a wonderful celebration and we thank Myer, Ferisita and Visesio for they way they so respectfully represented our Good Shepherd School community.

Parent Portal Reminder
School reports will be released via the Compass Parent Portal during the last week of this term. Paper copies will not be sent home with students, so it is important that you are able to access the Parent Portal.
If you have not already done so, please log in using the email that was sent to you a few weeks ago. If you feel you haven’t received this email, please check your computer’s “spam” folder, as some parents have found the email here.
If you have any difficulties, please contact the school office for assistance.
The Perfect Parent
How often have you heard a parent say “I wish they came with an instruction book”? The reality is that, while it can be the most rewarding job in the world, parenting can also be really tough.
According to SchoolTV’s expert panel, the mental health of today’s young people is at an all-time low. Depression, anxiety and self-harm are sadly on the rise. Unfortunately, there are more risk factors than protective factors, facing young people growing up.
To parent effectively, it is simply not enough to avoid the obvious dangers like abuse, neglect and overindulgence. Parents therefore, need to arm themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children. Numerous studies suggest that the best-adjusted children are reared by parents who find a way to combine warmth and sensitivity with clear behavioural expectations.
The National Academy of Sciences defines four major responsibilities necessary for good parenting. These include: maintaining a child's health and safety; promoting a child’s emotional wellbeing; instilling a child’s social skills; and preparing a child intellectually. There is no such thing as a perfect parent, but arming yourself with the right information is a good start!
To gain some insights into your own parenting style, and to find out more about strategies to help with the tricky parenting moments, SchoolTV has produced a quiz and a series of short videos on some of the most common questions asked, and issues faced, by parents. To find out more, click the link below or go to SchoolTV under the Student tab on the Good Shepherd home page.

What's Happening In Our Year 5 Classes?
What a huge term it has been in Year 5. We have had meetings with our Prep and Kinder PALS from Mary Mackillop, where we are all enjoying buddy reading sessions.
Earlier this term the majority of our students completed a series of NAPLAN tests online where they showed persistence and all tried their best.
Recently our students had a wonderful time competing in our school’s annual Cross Country/Fun Run event with many of our students representing our school, participating in NQ Netball Cup and the Bill Nettle Rugby Competition. This term our students have been attending swimming lessons at Kylie’s Swim School and have enjoyed working with coaches from the local rugby union association during our 5/6 sporting afternoons.
We recognised ‘Sorry Day’ by making posters and our students enjoyed attending our Reconciliation Liturgy, with our amazing Deadly Learner’s staff and students in the Community Centre.
This week our students have been working hard completing assessments so their teacher’s can write their school reports, we are looking forward to our Athletics Carnivals happening on the next couple of Fridays.

Environmental News
The oceans cover about two-thirds of the surface of the Earth and are the very foundations of life. They generate most of the oxygen we breathe, absorb a large share of carbon dioxide emissions, provide food and nutrients and regulate climate. They are important economically for countries that rely on tourism, fishing and other marine resources for income and serve as the backbone of international trade.
