From the Desk of the Principal

I am currently on long service leave and will return to school on Monday 16 May. Maxine Nolan is Acting Principal in my absence and is assisted by Rebecca Kershaw (APRE).
I hope you are all continuing to keep well and I look forward to catching up with you all when I return.

Sacramental Program

Last week we congratulated our students who participated in the 2022 Parish Sacramental Program.

Here are a couple of photos of the three children – Sienna (3C), Deizel(3A) and Isziah(3A).

Thank you to the wonderful teachers who prepared our young participants to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

Good Shepherd Sunday - 8th May 2022

This Sunday is a very important Sunday as it is ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’.
In the Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus reminds us that He is the Good Shepherd who died for His flock. Those who stay with Him will have eternal life.

“I am the good shepherd,”
says the Lord;
I know my sheep and
mine know me.”
-John 10:14

In the reading, Jesus offers His unwavering love and support to us as our Shepherd, but He also wants us to return this gift to Him by offering this same unwavering commitment to one another.
Reflect, today, how well you imitate the Good Shepherd.  Where you are lacking, let Him shepherd you so that you may shepherd others.  Run to the Good Shepherd and trust in His perfect love for you.

Happy Mothers' Day

This Mothers' Day and every day, may God bless all our mothers and those like mothers to us!

Thanks for your support

It was fantastic to see so many parents at the Cross Country Fun Run on Tuesday morning. Students really value the support of their parents/carers, and so do the staff. Congratulations to all students who participated. Details of the fundraising will be shared once it is finalised.

Code of Conduct

From time to time there may be issues arise at school which you feel need to be addressed. The proper procedure for this is to email or phone the classroom teacher in the first instance, and then the appropriate member of the leadership team (Mrs Rebecca Kershaw for matters involving Years 3 – 6 and myself for matters involving Prep – Year 2). Under no circumstances should a parent/carer approach another child, or that child’s parent/carer, about an issue.

All people involved in a school, including parents/carers are required to follow a Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct for Parents and Volunteers is available by clicking the link below, which is also on our school website, and is part of the enrolment package signed whenever a student starts at Good Shepherd.

Please click here to view the Code of Conduct for Parents and Volunteers https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwW89IFdgZS-X1F3S1oyZXNlc28/view?resourcekey=0-GyUI0yNJYsBDvj_Wkf2BfQ

The Code of Conduct outlines expectations for parents and carers, including that they “value the school community and its reputation especially when engaging with social media” and be mindful of the tone of emails. Further the Code states “under no circumstances approach another child whilst in the care of the school to address, discuss or chastise them because of actions towards your own child”. There is also NEVER any excuse for approaching another parent/carer, or a staff member, in a physically or verbally aggressive manner.

I would like to highlight a couple of other points from the Code of Conduct. Parents/carers are required to:

  • Support the school in its efforts to maintain a positive teaching and learning environment
  • Discourage gossip and hearsay by communicating with the school and always model good manners for your child
  • Maintain a positive and co-operative attitude and interact positively with other parents and members of the school community

Deliberate breaches and inability to respect the Townsville Catholic Education Code of Conduct for Parents & Volunteers or vexatious complaints may result in exclusion of a parent/guardian/caregiver from a school and/or possible termination of enrolment of their child/children.

Naplan 2022
Students in years 3 and 5 will be participating in NAPLAN tests during week 4 and 5 of term. Our Naplan schedule is:

The tests run for between 40 and 50 minutes and are all conducted online with the exception of the Year 4 Writing test, which is paper based.

You can help your child prepare for Naplan by ensuring they have a good night’s sleep before the tests and eat a nutritious breakfast before coming to school.

If you have any concerns about Naplan, or your child’s participation in the tests, please speak to their classroom teacher as soon as possible.

What's Happening In Our Year 4 Classes?

Year 4 has hit the ground running in Term 2 with a focus on book reviews in English! Students will be examining how character traits and the setting can impact upon the development of the plot of a book. The students have been enjoying spending their time reading books, ready to review them for their friends. We have also been learning about the Trinity in Religion, looking at the three divine persons of God. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The students were encouraged to create their own image to represent the Trinity. During this term the students will also be looking at the different forms of prayer structures. Year 4 students were excited to get into the pool for their lessons this term and have been enjoying the chance to improve their swimming skills

Environmental News

Compost is decomposed organic material, such as leaves, grass clippings, and kitchen waste. It provides many essential nutrients for plant growth and therefore is often used as fertilizer. Compost also improves soil structure so that soil can easily hold the correct amount of moisture, nutrients and air.
