From the Desk of the Principal
Congratulations to all of our students who competed in our annual Swimming Carnival last Thursday. It was a very close competition with Stuart finishing on 113 points, Bohle on 112 and Ross on 109. Thank you to our PE Teacher Ms Alisha Foord for organising a fabulous day for our school community. Thank you also to our parents and friends who attended and helped out on the day. Well done to the staff who also came first and second in the Teacher v Student relay.
Our next major sporting event will be our Cross Country on Friday 22 April. As part of our Cross Country this year we will be holding a "school fun run" fundraiser to raise funds to provide a covered area at the pick up zone. Coming home with your child today is information about the fundraising. The class that registers the most students online by 8:00am Friday 18 March will receive a pizza party so get registering!
I have been absent attending Principal Meetings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week but look forward to returning to school tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Project Compassion - Janice's Story
Janice lives on Jawoyn country in Arnhem Land. Like many remote communities in the Northern Territory, Janice’s faces a range of challenges – low employment and education, financial hardship, poorer health and lower life expectancy.
With your help, Caritas Australia supports Djilpin Arts Aboriginal Corporation, which operates a centre for traditional and contemporary Aboriginal arts and culture, providing employment and generating income for local communities.
Elders run workshops and share their knowledge with the younger generation, and with visitors. Local guides run bush cultural tours and architect-designed tourist accommodation is available for visitors.
Watch a short film about Janice's story by clicking the link below.

The Magical World of Crazy Science
Budding scientists will be left spellbound on Thursday, when the entire school takes part in a unique show that combines science, illusion and the arts, The Magical World of Crazy Science. The show is described as “a delightful mixture of magical visual science demonstrations that teaches a wide array of science concepts” and is presented by host Richard Scholes.
Students will witness giant columns of elephant toothpaste, a genie’s appearance from a lamp, the world’s weirdest bird, massive smoke rings zooming and toilet paper flying, levitations, gigantic bubbles, mountains of slime and billowing concoctions. The show is also aligned to Australian Curriculum, and is a great way to engage students of all ages and show them just how exciting and magical science can be.
I am sure your child will come home with many great stories about the show. Be sure to check out Facebook on Thursday for photos.
School Refusal
We all have days when we would rather stay home than go to work – and our students are no different! Many children will refuse to go to school at some stage in their lives, but what can you do if it becomes a regular occurrence? And what are the reasons behind it?
According to Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, school refusal is a complex issue as there’s rarely a single cause. “It may be linked to separation anxiety, worries about leaving home, a phobia, depression, social problems or learning difficulties. It can start gradually or happen suddenly,” Dr Carr-Gregg said.
The School TV report into school refusal has a wealth of information, including videos on the implications of school refusal, first steps in dealing with the problem, the effects on academic achievement, and the importance of routine, structure and sleep. To see the full report, click the link below or go to School TV under the student tab on the Good Shepherd home page.

What's Happening In Our Year 6 Classes?
In Year 6 we have been learning all about federation including who and what was involved. We have been investigating some of the important indigenous perspectives during that time. We have learnt many things and formed our own opinions about federation and what has occurred. In one of our lessons, we worked in teams and researched the sacred sites of indigenous people and how they have provided for the indigenous long before colonisation and federation.

If you must use pesticides in the garden, opt for those made from natural ingredients, such as pyrethrum. Birds, frogs and reptiles can become sick or die if they feed on insects sprayed with pesticides.
