From the Desk of the Principal
Last week we had the Townsville Bulletin attend Prep to take photos of our students for their annual Prep liftout. I am unsure of the publication date but will advise you as soon as I know. Our school captains Thomas and Paige also featured in the Townsville Bulletin last week in their School Captains feature.
We have made the decision to postpone our school photos. The photos were scheduled to take place on Monday 7 March but with the current high number of student and staff absences we have decided to move the photos to Term 2 or 3. We will advise you of the new date once we have confirmed it with the photographers. We appreciate your support and understanding with this decision to postpone.
As mentioned last week, we are continuing to be notified of Covid cases among students and staff. When there is a positive case in a certain class we are notifying parents within that class group. We ask you to continue to monitor your child/ren's health and if they develop any flu like symptoms:
- Keep your child/ren at home
Seek a PCR or Rapid Antigen test where it is recommended
Follow the advice of QLD health
We thank you for your ongoing support and patience as we attempt to all stay safe.
I will be absent next week attending Principal Meetings from Monday to Wednesday. Enjoy the rest of your week.

The Lenten Season
This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allows Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.
We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box for their donations or you can donate online via the Caritas Australia website at: lent.caritas.org.au
The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’. It is an expression of hope and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues.
Project Compassion 2022 shares the stories of resilient and inspiring individuals whose lives and futures have been impacted by the ongoing support of our partners and by your generosity. We encourage students to discover the power of giving and the impact that their contribution, however big or small, can have in the lives of others. When we lend a hand to someone in need, they will go on to help others and make better opportunities for future generations. Compassion is contagious and creates a ripple effect of kindness and prosperity.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away!
We are all familiar with the saying, and know that a healthy, balanced diet is a key to good health. Did you realise, though, that diet can also impact on a child’s mental health, including feelings of anxiety?
According to research presented on SchoolTV, a link between common nutrient shortfalls and metabolic imbalances, and addressing those can help your child live a happier, healthier, calmer life whilst also building resilience in the longer term.
Interesting points from the article include:
- worry and anxiety can in themselves deplete nutritional reserves further, so this is why the right diet is important;
- there is a direct connection between gut health and brain activity, which influences stress-related and psychiatric issues including anxiety, depression, and OCD;
- avoiding or cutting down on foods with a high sugar content and reducing white carbohydrate intake can help relieve feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, low energy and depression.
To read the full article, “Managing Anxiety and Building Resilience in Kids: How Nutrition Can Help” click the link below or access SchoolTV from the Student tab on the Good Shepherd website. This article is one in a series about building resilience.

What's Happening In Our Year 3 Classes?
Year 3 has blown Miss Christie and Miss Marshall away with how well they have settled into the school year, full of positivity and enthusiasm. We have just completed our Maths 3D shape unit where students created a toy or game to teach their Year 1 pals about 3D shapes. There were so many different elements that went into making our game/toy including: making our 3D shapes from nets, designing our game/toy from recycled materials, creating a flipgrid explaining our game/toy and 3D shapes and of course, presenting them to our Year 1 pals on Friday. We can’t believe we have already passed the halfway mark for Term 1. We look forward to a year full of fun, learning and laughter!
