From the Desk of the Principal

It's been a huge week of celebration and recognition. Last Wednesday afternoon we held our Semester Two Awards afternoon. Congratulations to all of our students who received Academic Achievement, Academic Endeavour, Gospel in Action, Indigenous Student and Sportsperson awards. Congratulations also to Jasmine Birse who received the Kerry Bevans Citizenship Award.

On Monday our Year 5 students presented their leadership speeches in order to be selected as school or sports captains for 2022. Voting took place across the Year 3 to 5 students as well as staff. Congratulations to Paige Wise and Thomas McCall (2022 School Captains), Heidi Grinham and Kai Craig (2022 Bohle Sports Captains), Isabella Power and Riley Guy (2022 Ross Sports Captains) and Ava Lucy and Kohen Balderson (2022 Stuart Sports Captains). I am confident our school will be in very capable hands with these students and their peers leading us in 2022.

Our 2022 Teachers and Classes have been finalised and I am pleased to announce them here:

Mrs Ingrid Grant is joining us from an early childhood background that includes both schools and kindergartens, Ms Patricia Elechko is joining us from Holy Spirit Catholic School, Ms Caitlin Christie is joining us from St Joseph's Catholic School Mt Isa, Ms Amanda Marshall is joining us from Brisbane Catholic Education, Ms Mollie Larney is joining us as a new recruit from JCU, Mr Alex Bluck is joining us from the Army and formerly St Francis Catholic School Hughenden and St Teresa's College Abergowrie and Ms Saskia Brown is joining us from Good Shepherd Catholic College Mt Isa. In 2022 planning, preparation and correction time for teachers also increases. This means that our teachers will be out of their class for one day a fortnight. Ms Margaret Turley, Mrs Sonis Foster and Ms Susan Paul will be covering the classes on these days and our students will also continue to experience Arts and PE lessons each week.

Next Tuesday's Transition Day will be an opportunity for our students to meet their 2022 teachers and classmates. Unfortunately Ms Caitlin Christie and Ms Amanda Marshall are unable to attend. All students will receive a bag of information ahead of the 2022 school year.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

Thank you to the families who have already sent in items for the class Christmas hampers.
This activity is a great way to involve our students in a real act of service to others in this up and coming Christmas period and reminds us all that Christmas is a time of giving to others.

Our Mini Vinnies’ last visit to Parklands was Saturday morning. Lillian did a great job of calling for Bingo while Jasmine helped the residents.

Visiting the residents at Parklands is a real highlight of being a Mini Vinnie. The students enjoy spending time with the ladies and gentlemen just as much as the residents appreciate the visits. Unfortunately, due to extra restrictions being put in place for the second half of this year, not as many Mini Vinnies have had the opportunity to go to Parklands. However, I would still like to thank ALL our Mini Vinnies for your enthusiastic participation this year!

Transition to High School

Many of our Year 6 students have been participating in transition days in preparation for starting high school next year. The move from being one of the “big kids” at school to being one of the youngest and newest at the school can be a big adjustment for many children.

It’s important to remember that while starting Year 7 can feel a bit daunting, high school also has a lot of exciting opportunities for students to take part in.

SchoolTV has a Special Report on Starting Year 7 that may prove interesting and beneficial, and includes a number of strategies that can be used to ensure students start the new school year off right.

Please click here to view the Special Report https://gstsv.catholic.schooltv.me/wellbeing_news/special-report-starting-year-7

Fun with Franki

Fetch is one of Franki’s favourite past-times. Last week Alex spent some time playing with Franki – and wore her out so much that she slept for the rest of the afternoon!

Games such as fetch are a great activity for Franki, providing exercise, mental stimulation and the chance to interact in a fun way with people. This playtime can also be beneficial for students, providing an opportunity to take a movement break, a chance regulate their emotions and move from the Yellow, Blue or Red Zone to the Green Zone, or simply a reward for focussing on a task for an extended period.

Having a therapy dog like Franki in the school can also provide social support and connection for students and staff through a variety of activities. Opportunities for students who lack social connection to access the therapy dog in an informal context during various break times can be a great social support. Franki attracts a small crowd whenever she’s out in the playground, and many of those students bond or connect with new people over their common interest in Franki. Therapy dogs can also be incorporated into social skills interventions with individuals or small groups.

Semester 2 Reports
Semester 2 reports will be sent home with students on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
This will be the last time printed reports are sent home. From Semester 1, 2022, reports will be available digitally. Information on how to access them will be sent out early next year.

What's Happening In Our Year 3 Classes

It has been a busy term in Year 3! In English students learnt about poetry and created acrostic and shape poems as well as rhyming triplets. In Maths we covered a variety of topics including symmetry, 3D shape, angles and probability.  In Religion we explored how the Gospel authors told the life and teachings of Jesus through their Gospels including the Christian belief that Jesus was the Messiah. In Science we explored changes of states in matter that occur when matter is heated. In HASS students learnt about an Asian country and compared their chosen country with Australia. In Technology we created graphs using digital technologies and investigated the purpose and properties of materials used in design. We are now preparing for the Christmas concert which will be held on Monday 29th November. We hope to see you there!

Environmental Tips

Vinegar is cheap, it's useful, and people have been using it for years. Vinegar kills 99% of bacteria and more than 80% of mold and germs. It's non-toxic, safe, and good for the environment. It's also extremely affordable compared to all the household cleaners on the market. Mix Vinegar with water to make a natural and safe cleaning spray.
