From the Desk of the Principal
Thank you to all families and friends who supported our Missions Mini Fete on Friday. I'm confident each of the students picked up some wonderful bargains all while supporting a great cause.
Planning for 2022 is well and truly underway including recruitment of staff. Next year we will be running 19 classes - three streams from Prep to Year 4 and two streams in Year 5 and 6. To assist us to continue to plan for 2022, please return your continuing enrolment forms as soon as possible. This will assist us in allocating classes ahead of our whole school Transition Day (Step Up Day) on Tuesday 30 November.
Don't forget to wear red this Friday for Day for Daniel - a day where we continue to remind students how to be safe in all environments. On Friday we will also be celebrating all of our staff on World Teachers Day.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Year 4

Years 5 & 6
Relationships - Evolving Friendships
Identifies characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships and explores managing emotions.
Puberty - Welcome to Puberty
Identifies physical, social and emotional changes during puberty and investigates sources of support.
Mission Day Activities
On Friday Prep C, with a little help from some of their 5A buddies, led our Missions Day Liturgy. They reminded us that we need to ‘be Jesus – head, heart and hands’ for others, especially those less fortunate than ourselves.
Later that day we held our Missions Mini Fete. A wonderful time was had by all and lots of sugar consumed! Thank you to everyone who donated prizes etc for the stalls. We raised $1769.40 for Catholic Mission.
This week our activities continue with students participating in poverty awareness lessons. For example, during PE, classes are competing in shootout competitions using ‘sockballs’ – balls they made in class using recycled materials.
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on HOPE.
The Walk to Emmaus. “Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.” Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Luke 24:13-35

Day for Daniel
This Friday, 29 October, students are encouraged to wear a red shirt to mark Day for Daniel. Red icy cups will also be on sale from the brand new tuckshop.
Most adults would know the story of Daniel Morcombe, who was abducted and murdered while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast in December 2003. His parents, Bruce and Denise, went on to establish the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, which aims to educate children and young people about how to stay safe in physical and online environments and to support young victims of crime.
It is important to speak openly with children about their safety, and strategies they can use to help keep themselves safe. Bruce and Denise Morcombe often speak about teaching children to trust their instincts, to trust when something doesn’t feel right. They also recommend having children identify five safe people they can talk to at home and school if they are concerned or feel unsafe. This activity is regularly done at school, usually in the form of a hand with names written on each finger.
There are many valuable resources for children of all ages at their website. Please ensure you have this important conversation with your children.
If only they came with a manual…
Children don’t come with a “how to” manual or an instruction book, making parenting one of the hardest jobs – just when you think you’ve nailed it, something else comes up and you feel like you’re back to square one! As the mother of three children (who are now young adults), I remember wondering at times if I would survive…
As a parent at Good Shepherd, you have access to a fantastic FREE resource that offers information about a range of topics, including parenting tips. That resource is SchoolTV, which can be accessed on the link below or by going to the student tab on our school’s home page.
There you will find a Positive Parenting Series, which includes topics such as raising girls, raising boys, friendships and belonging, resilience, and happiness and gratitude.
There are also lots of other topics, which are added to regularly and cover a wide range of issues impacting on families and young people today. Please take the time to explore the site.

Continuing Enrolment 2022
We will be starting the process of organising classes for 2022. You will receive a reminder this week if you haven't already returned the form. Thank you.
What's Happening In Year 5 Classes
It’s been a very busy start to Term 4 in Grade 5. In the first couple of weeks, students all worked hard, completing their online PAT testing, in Maths, Reading and Spelling. It’s been encouraging to see the progress they’ve all made since the beginning of the year.
Last week most of our students, along with their classroom teachers, Mrs Aili and parent helpers Mr James, and Mrs Melissa, headed off to camp up to Gumburu, in Paluma.
We all had a wonderful time exploring and learning about the magnificent rainforest.
All our students showed great resilience when attempting activities that took them outside their comfort zone. We went on many long bush walks, explored small creeks looking for invertebrates, and attempted to face fears on the high ropes course.
Our students continued to follow the GSCS Way and were amazing ambassadors for our school. They used their manners and were kind and respectful of everyone and everything. We’d like to sincerely thank our parent helpers- Melissa Tyack, and James Tapau, who accompanied us. We truly appreciate the support you showed our staff and all our students. We’d also like to send a HUGE shout out to Mrs Aili, our school’s Inclusive Education teacher who accompanied us. Mrs Aili has been to Gumburu on school camp many times during her teaching career. She was able to share with us her wealth of knowledge, guiding and sharing information about the magical area we visited.

Be careful about feeding birds in your garden. Try not to let native birds become too dependent on the food supply. For the long-term, plant native shrubs and trees to provide birds with natural food.
