From the Desk of the Principal
Welcome to Week 2! It's been a big start to the week already with the Book Fair taking place this week. Thank you to Mrs Cameron for organising another wonderful Fair for our community. Don't forget the Book Fair is before and after school each day until Friday.
Swimming lessons have commenced for our Prep students this week and will continue over the next few weeks with our Year 1 and 2 students too.
Last Friday and Saturday Mrs DeDaunton and I completed Phase Two of the Stronger Smarter Leadership Program. The program equips educators to challenge mindsets within schools to actively engage the school community and staff to enact High-Expectations Relationships, promote positive identities and excellence in schools. Mrs DeDaunton and I are excited to share our learning with our school community.
I am away Wednesday, Thursday and Friday attending Principal Meetings. I look forward to catching up with everyone on my return to school on Monday. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Busy Preps
Prep B has been very busy investigating what happens during Mass. They have also been learning about and using labyrinths.
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on COMPASSION.
“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.
Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
So likewise, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’
Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
He said, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:30-37)

NAPLAN
By now all students in Years 3 and 5 should have their NAPLAN results report. These were handed out last week, so please check your child’s school bag if you haven’t yet seen it.
When reading the NAPLAN report, it is important to remember that it is only one way of measuring your child’s academic performance. In fact the NAPLAN website urges caution when comparing reading the report, saying “NAPLAN is a valuable tool that can give useful insights into a student’s performance over time, but individual reports should be interpreted with care as they reflect the student’s performance on the day of testing.”
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s NAPLAN results, discuss them with your child’s teacher, who will have the best insight into your child’s educational progress.
For more information about NAPLAN results reports, click here.
READING AND MATHS “PAT TESTS”
This week and next, students from Years 2 to 6 will be taking part in Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT). These tests are completed by students across the Townsville Diocese in October each year, and provide an insight into their progress in the past 12 months.
Students in Years 3 to 6 will complete tests in Reading, Maths and Punctuation and Grammar, while Year 2 will complete Reading and Maths. It is important to note that these online tests are a maximum of 40 minutes long, and tests are assigned according to each student’s ability level. This means your child may do a different test to their best friend.
Teachers are able to access test results immediately, and use the results to guide their teaching in coming weeks.
