From the Desk of the Principal
Welcome back to Term 4! I trust you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday break.
Term 4 is one of our shortest and busiest terms. Swimming lessons will commence soon for our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. We also have Book Fair, Mission Week, Day for Daniel, Good Shepherds' Got Talent, our Christmas Concert, Transition Day and Year 6 Rite of Passage. Be sure to keep up to date with all of these events both in the newsletter and on our Facebook page.
Yesterday we welcomed Mr James Tapau and Mrs Susan Gough to our Good Shepherd Family. Mr Tapau will be working in our Year 1 classes and Mrs Gough will be teaching 2C. I am confident you will all warmly welcome James and Susan to our family.
I will be absent attending the final phase of Stronger Smarter Training along with Mrs DeDaunton on Friday and Saturday. Both Kylie and I are excited to introduce this program to our school in 2022.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Welcome Mr James Tapau and Mrs Susan Gough to our Good Shepherd Family.

The Rosary
October is the month of the Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on the 7th October. The word Rosary comes from Latin and means a garland of roses, the rose being one of the flowers used to symbolise the Virgin Mary. The Rosary is a devotion in honour of Mary. The Holy Rosary is considered a perfect prayer because within it lies the awesome story of our salvation. With the Rosary in fact we meditate the mysteries of joy, of sorrow and the glory of Jesus and Mary.
The month of October is devoted to the Missions. During this time we have an opportunity to act in solidarity through fundraising, prayerful support, awareness and advocacy. Catholic Mission is one of the organisations that our Diocese has chosen to support.
SUNDAY 24 OCTOBER is MISSION SUNDAY. It’s the one Sunday in the year when the entire global Church comes together to support mission. And every single donation from these worldwide Masses goes to support churches, hospitals, schools and vocations in countries where the Church is new, young or poor.
Every Catholic community, in every country, sends a powerful message of faith, hope and love on this special day.
What’s happening at GSCS?
- Friday 22 October to Thursday 28October – Class Activities
- Friday 22 October – Liturgy in the BBC during Assembly
- Friday 22 October – Mini Fete 12:00 to 1:00pm in the shed to raise funds for Catholic Mission
Class teachers will be in contact with parents soon regarding the Mini Fete and which stalls each class will run. Children are encouraged to bring $5.00 to spend on the day if they can and maybe a bag to put their items in. Parents are welcome to attend the Liturgy and Mini Fete.
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on COMMUNITY.
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them"

Week 1 Term 4
Welcome back to the last term of 2021! We have a jam-packed nine weeks ahead, with lots of fantastic learning opportunities for our students, as well as a few special events.
One of the great new initiatives all parents have access to is SchoolTV, which contains up-to-date resources aimed at providing information on key topics relating to parenting and the wellbeing of our children. Each topic or edition addresses key issues using brief interviews with expert specialists, fact sheets, parent quizzes, recommended apps, books and much more. Information is from a range of reputable sources such as REACHOUT and beyondblue, Australian Psychological Society, Nutrition Australia, headspace and esafety Commission, which means parents can be reassured that the information is accurate and appropriate.
New topics are added to the SchoolTV library regularly, so be sure to check in frequently. The site can be accessed from the GSCS website homepage, under the “Students” tab, or by clicking here.
This week I would like to direct your attention to the topic of the month: Happiness and Gratitude. With the busy-ness of everyday life, juggling family, work and community commitments, we sometimes forget that we have a lot to be grateful for. Take a look at the happiness and gratitude information by clicking here.
With the return to school, I also wanted to issue a couple of reminders:
1: Before school in the Shed: Parents are welcome to wait with students in the Shed before school. However, we ask that you help your child to follow the GSCS Way, which means sitting quietly in the Shed chatting to friends. Playing ball games, swinging your child around and playing tiggy with them are examples of behaviour that we don’t want to see in the Shed before school. If you are waiting in another area with your child, please have only your children with you – their friends need to wait in the Shed – and ensure children are sitting quietly.
2: Pick Up Zone: Parents arriving from 2pm to queue in the pick-up zone need to ensure they are not blocking access to vacant car parks. There have been numerous instances where people coming to the school, including staff returning from excursions with students, have been forced to park across the road as they can not access vacant car parks because they are blocked by people queuing. Please consider parking and walking in to meet your child, rather than queuing for the pick-up zone.
3: Dogs at school: Just a reminder that dogs should not be brought on to school grounds. While we all love to cuddle and pat a puppy, dogs brought on to school grounds can pose a risk to students, staff and the dog itself. The exception to this is Franki, our school’s therapy dog in-training, who will be in attendance three days each week. Franki is undergoing her training and ongoing assessment, and is covered by the school’s insurance while on the school grounds and working with students. Thank you for your cooperation with this – and feel free to say hi when you see Franki around.

What's Happening in Our Year 6 Classes
Last term, the Year 6 students were learning all about countries around the world, particularly those in the Asian region. They explored and researched a range of different countries during their Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) lessons and also wrote persuasive speeches, trying to convince people to visit their country of choice. To finish off the unit at the end of last term, the students then held a ‘Travel Expo’ where they showcased one of the countries they’d learnt about. Some students brought along traditional food and costumes from their country, whilst others had created posters, brochures, flags and more! It was a wonderful afternoon and allowed the students to immerse themselves in the culture of many different countries from around the world.

Environmental Tips
Weeds destroy the environment by displacing native vegetation and replacing food sources and habitats for native animals. Aquatic weeds choke waterways and wetlands. Weeds can destroy our enjoyment and recreational use of natural areas. Be a Weedbuster and stop the invasion.
