From the Desk of the Principal
It's been another fabulous week of fun, learning and celebrating around school. Thank you to families who joined us at the Big Mob Brekkie and Prep Father's Day celebration on Thursday. On Friday our Teachers and School Officers enjoyed a day of professional learning as part of our Pupil Free Reflective Practice Day. Yesterday our Year 2 students had a fabulous time on their excursion to Jezzine Barracks. Thank you to the parent helpers who also joined them.
This week we are excited to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of our school. We look forward to welcoming back many of our former staff and students including Foundation Principal Paul Cosgriff and former Principal Ed Burke. We also look forward to Fr Dave Lancini presiding over our mass celebration on Friday morning. As many of you know, Fr Dave has been the parish priest since the school opened in 1996. Please note that the office will be closed from 8:45am to 10:00am while all staff attend the celebration mass.
Good Shepherd Day promises to be lots of fun with our Rainbow Run as well. Students are reminded to please wear their academic or sports uniform to school on Friday and bring along an old pair of shorts to change in to. White shirts for the run will be provided to all students.
I look forward to seeing many of you on Friday and celebrating 25 years of our fabulous school with you. Enjoy the rest of your week.

25th ANNIVERSARY
Please join us for Mass this Friday to celebrate Good Shepherd Catholic School’s 25th Anniversary. Everyone is welcome!
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on SERVICE.
‘For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’ Mark 10:45

Science Madness at Science Club
At Good Shepherd, students have the opportunity to attend a variety of lunchtime clubs. One very popular choice is Science Club, held on Tuesdays for Prep to Year 2 students and on Thursdays for Years 3 to 6.
Science Club, run by Mrs Charmaine Aili, alternates between experiments and STEM (short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) tasks.
In Prep to 2, the students engage in STEM activities using Lego, K’nex and Strawbees every second week. Students work in pairs, in groups or on their own, depending how they feel. They use the Strawbees kits and follow an instruction card to create things like frogs, sharks, dinosaurs, rockets, bridges, 3D shapes etc.
They also use K’nex construction toys and follow instructions on challenge cards to build objects such as models of robots and bridges. Design challenges require students to create, for example, something that spins or that you might fly. Lego challenges include using Lego blocks to build items as varied as musical instruments, cars or rainbows.
The STEM activities for the Year 3 to 6 students involve a different type of investigation. Students have tried to climb through a sheet of paper, build a cardboard boat and make it float, create an international space station and build a bridge out of pasta and marshmallows.
Every second week, each group has an investigation to engage with. The Prep to 2s have experimented with different types of milk and food colouring to create art, made three different mixtures to see which one makes the best bubbles, and tried to make Jelly beans float. Next week they will be trying to make rainbows!
The Year 3 to 6 group have made bath bombs and elephant’s toothpaste which have ingredients that, when mixed together, cause chemical reactions (not harmful of course!). In the next couple of weeks, they will be creating Sherbet Fizz and placing skewers through balloons!
Mrs Aili also has regular helpers from Year 5 and 6 to support the younger budding scientists. These students help with setting up experiment ingredients and equipment, help the younger students measure out quantities and clean up afterwards. It is great to see these students embracing the GSCS Way and helping others!

What's Happening in Our Year 4 Classes
Students have been busy preparing for our 25th anniversary. Each class has designed and created a wonderful planter pot to be filled with plants this Friday, Good Shepherd Day, and set in our grounds.
Students have also been busy academically, learning about data representation and reading data. They have made bar graphs using familiar data. In addition, students are now learning to add multiple amounts of money using vertical sums.
During English, students have investigated what it was like for convicts on their journey to Australia and completed a convict journal. Students were particularly surprised at how difficult life was for children of their age in the late 1700’s. We are now focusing on the art of persuasion and persuasive devices, of which, the students are already quite masterful!
The students in 4B have spent the last days ‘teaching’ their teacher what they have learnt in her absence and have been very knowledgeable. It is now 4A’s turn to teach their substitute teacher what they have learnt, while Ms Feaver is on Long Service Leave.
Students have had the opportunity to be involved in many fun activities in and out of the class and have enjoyed attending the Father’s Day Stall, Book Week Parade, Great Book Swap and Indigenous Literacy Week activities.
Students are becoming weary though and are looking forward to the coming holidays. May all our families stay safe and enjoy the coming time together.

Environmental Tips
Buy clothes to last. Clothing has a large eco-footprint because of the impact of cotton and wool on the environment. Consider op shops and recycled clothes boutiques.
