From the Desk of the Principal
Happy Book Week! I can't wait to see all of the fabulous book characters at tomorrow's Book Week Parade! As part of Book Week, the Library is closed with staff at both lunch breaks reading with students in various areas around our school.
Our Reading Superstars were rewarded on Assembly last Friday along with our Sporting Superstars from Red Track. The Premiers Reading Challenge finishes this Friday so there is still time for your child to complete the challenge and be rewarded on Assembly.
This week has seen a number of visitors to our classes including artists, parents and puppies! It is always a joy to see the family and community partnerships come to life in our classes.
We can announce a little bit of staff movement ahead of the 2022 school year. Sherry Evans will be transferring out to Holy Spirit Catholic School in 2022 and Charmaine Aili will officially be transferring in to Good Shepherd from Our Lady of Lourdes. Rae Hamilton will be leaving us as her family has been transferred with the Army. Jean Nott will also be leaving us as her partner takes up a new position in the Mackay region. Peta Borg will also be leaving us at the end of Term 1 but will be on leave from the commencement of the 2022 school year. We thank Sherry, Rae, Jean and Peta for their contributions to our Good Shepherd Family during their time here. There will of course be opportunities to farewell Sherry, Rae, Jean and Peta at the end of the year. More staff announcements will be made in Term 4.
See you at the Book Week Parade tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your week.

PARKLANDS VISIT
On Saturday morning two very keen Mini Vinnies joined me at Parklands Aged Care Facility. Lillian did a fantastic job as the Bingo caller and Oliver was a great help to the residents ensuring they didn’t miss any numbers!

THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on LOVE.
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 1 John 4: 7-9

The importance of motor skills for ALL students!
There are many students who struggle with writing, not because they lack creative ideas, but because the physical act of writing is difficult. If students reach middle to upper primary school with poor motor skills, it can negatively affect their writing. According to Firefly Education, not only does the physical act of handwriting become tiring, poor motor skills can also impact a student’s ability to write fluently. Students simply don’t want to pick up a pen and write an imaginative text or persuasive essay, not because ideas aren’t flowing, but because they don’t have adequate control over the tool used to get the job done.
When students have difficulty writing, it might be caused by a deficiency in gross and fine motor skills. Gross motor skills require students to use their back, shoulder and arm strength to assist with postural control and stamina. Fine motor skills require strength and dexterity in the lower arms, wrists, hands and fingers. Students rely heavily on these skills to handwrite correctly and fluently.
There are many easy and fun activities that can help people of all ages develop gross and fine motor skills including bean bag toss (throwing small bean bag from one person to another, then stand on one leg, catch with one hand etc); juggling using home-made balls made with rice and balloons; fine art colouring in; writing words in magic sand; and gardening and digging.
Please click the link below for more information from Firefly Education on how to support the development of motor skills.

What's Happening in Our Year 2 Classes
This week, Year 2 have enjoyed making Water Cycle collages, demonstrating what they have learnt about the water cycle. 2A loved sharing their knowledge with everyone at Assembly and there were a lot of smiles in 2B and 2C as they supported their peers on stage. Moving forward, we will investigate how water gets to our taps, thinking about ways to be water wise and discussing why this is important as we learn about water treatment plants and what happens to our waste water.
The Year 2 students have also been investigating the history of different landmarks at The Strand in preparation for our much anticipated excursion next week. We look forward to exploring the cultural and historical significance of landmarks in the Jezzine Barracks location. Please remember to complete the Volunteer Induction if you would like to join us for this exciting event. We can’t wait to share what we learn!
