From the Desk of the Principal
Well done to all of our Reading Superstars who have completed the Premiers Reading Challenge. These superstars were presented with their certificates at Assembly on Friday.
We love having visitors to our school and were delighted to welcome our Police friends Brad and Luke on Friday and former North Queensland Cowboys player Matty Bowen on Monday. Brad and Luke spent some time assisting at Year 3 soccer and Matty had a game of touch footy with our Year 4, 5 and 6 students.
Yesterday we had 65 students represent Good Shepherd at the Interschool Athletics Carnival. A wonderful day was had by all and we heard wonderful reports back about the high level of school spirit and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Charli Cox and Heidi Grinham who have both been selected to attend the NQ Trials. Charli has been selected to compete in 100m, 200m and shot put and Heidi has been selected for high jump. Well done!
Next week is Book Week. We look forward to seeing lots of wonderful costumes at the Book Week Parade on Thursday. Families and friends are welcome to join us in the BBC for the parade.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Please remember the following conditions stipulated by Parklands:
• Parents are no longer allowed to stay during the visit.
• ALL students need to have had a flu vaccination to visit the facility and proof of receiving the vaccination (Flu Vaccination Certificate) needs to be shown each visit.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD WAY
The Good Shepherd Way is our Gospel in Action here at Good Shepherd Catholic School. It encourages students to live out the following ten values by thriving to follow the action associated with it:
• Community - I connect and engage
• Compassion - I show care and concern for others
• Endeavour - I challenge myself to do my best
• Hope - I see good all around me
• Inclusion - I involve and accept others
• Justice - I make right choices
• Love - I share my good heart with others
• Reconciliation - I am fair, forgiving and respectful
• Service - I help and respond to the needs of others
• Stewardship - I care for all of creation
Each week we focus on one of these values and an award is presented at assembly to a student in each class who has demonstrated the value that week.
This week we are focusing on Justice.
“And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ (Matthew 25:40-45)

Many parents worry about how their child will fare at high school and beyond, particularly if they have learning difficulties or a disability. All our children learn at different rates, have different talents and will “blossom” at the time that is right for them.
I had a conversation along those lines with a parent earlier this week, and tried to reassure them that with the right support their child can not only survive, but thrive.
Shortly after that conversation, I came across the following photo, which is taken from the inside cover of a “Captain Underpants” book, written by Dav Pilkey.
Dav has written more than 45 books, including the popular series Dog Man, Dragon and Ricky Ricotta’s Might Robot series.
All children can succeed, we just need to believe in them, support them, and have patience!

What's Happening in Our Year 5 Classes
Term 3 has continued to be another busy term for Year 5. We started the term celebrating NAIDOC week, which saw many of our students participating in our NAIDOC week liturgy, run by our amazing Deadly Learners team. Both classes have also enjoyed spending time meditating out in our Yalga and Yarning circle areas near the Library.
The following week we celebrated Catholic Education week where all our students were busy completing an act of kindness. Our students wrote appreciation/thank you cards to staff members they see making a difference around our wonderful school. Our classes also spent time with our PAL classes, meditating and enjoying some time together.
In Week 3, many of our students headed to ‘Red Track’ to participate in the ‘Challenge Games’. A wonderful time was had by all involved.
We have continued to visit with our Mary Mackillop PALS each fortnight. Our students read to the kinder students and build relationships with each other. They will be able to continue into next year when our students are school leaders in Year 6 and those students from Mary Mackillop are new Prep students.
Last Friday, 5A students and parents gave Miss Nott a surprise birthday party and 5B surprised her with a cake we all enjoyed.
This week many of our talented students headed to ‘Red Track’ to compete at the next level of the Athletic championships by competing against many students from various schools across Townsville. We were very proud of the way they represented our school, ensuring that they followed the GSCS Way whilst out in the community.

Keep Australia Beautiful- “Pledge to ditch plastic.”
Our beautiful country needs help to protect its precious biodiversity. Plastic that ends up in nature can take up to 500 years to decompose and can harm animals that ingest it. We’re calling on all Aussies to make a pledge to ditch a plastic item for Keep Australia Beautiful Week. Big changes start small so, come on Australia, let’s take on the challenge.
The best alternatives to plastic wrap:
- Beeswax wraps. Beeswax wraps are one of the simplest and easiest cling wrap swaps you can make. https://www.beewrappy.com.au/
- 4MyEarth, food cover set - https://www.4myearth.com.au/products/
- Agreena, reusable silicone food wraps. https://www.nourishedlife.com.au/article/3051508/best-eco-friendly-cling-wrap-alternatives.html
