From the Desk of the Principal
Happy Catholic Education Week! The theme for this year's Catholic Education Week is "A Spirited Tomorrow" which acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future. Our "Spirit of Catholic Education" award recipient for 2021 is Mrs Debbie Hocking. Deb will receive her award at a special presentation this evening which we will share on our Facebook page. We congratulate Deb and thank her for she has contributed and continues to contribute to Catholic education. Also, as part of Catholic Education Week, our students will be participating in Acts of Kindness this week. Stay tuned for photos on our Facebook page.
As an entree into Catholic Education Week, we had eight of our students perform at Mulkadee on Friday night. Lillian, Jasmine, Riley, Lillian-May, Indigo, Kailey, Mia and Bryton joined approximately 700 other students to perform "The Wizard of Oz" on Friday night at the Entertainment Centre. Well done students and thank you to Mrs Turley for accompanying the students all week.
On Monday night some of our Year 5 and 6 students competed in the Les Stagg Rugby League Challenge. This is an elimination competition for primary schools in Townsville. We played the two twenty minute halves with only 13 players and no subs and ended up drawing with Wulguru State School 20-20. Unfortunately Wulguru was the first team to score so they will progress to the next round and we have been eliminated. Our students should be so proud of how they represented themselves and our school community at this event as they were very unlucky to lose the game. Thank you so much to Ms Alisha Foord and to one of our Dads James Tapau in preparing the team for this competition.
Today and tomorrow we have a number of students competing in the Challenge Games. We look forward to sharing photos with you on our Facebook page and in next week's newsletter. Good luck kids and have fun!
Don't forget we are holding "A Cuppa With The Leadership Team" after Assembly this Friday. I look forward to having you join Judy, Maxine and myself for a cuppa. Enjoy the rest of your week.

This week we are celebrating the great things that take place in Catholic schools, especially Good Shepherd, every day.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is: A Spirited Tomorrow.
This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future.
On Monday, our School Captains – Emmi McCartney and Matthew Milne – joined Ms Scrase and me at the annual Catholic Education Week Mass held at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Coming together with other schools from the Townsville Diocese was a great way to begin the week.
Here are a few pictures of classes participating in other CEW activities. Check next week’s Newsletter for more!
Please join us at Assembly on Friday for our Catholic Education Week Liturgy, led by 1A and some of their Pal class buddies from 3C.

Good Shepherd is once again taking part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. For students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience the allocated number of books based on their year level before Friday, 27 August 2021.
Prep to Year 4 students are required to read 20 books to successfully complete the challenge and Year 5 and 6 students are required to read 15. Reading independently, shared reading and being read to can all be counted towards the challenge.
A variety of texts can also be counted:
printed books
e-books, virtual books and digital publications
graphic novels and comic books
audio and braille books
newspapers, magazines and recipe books
books in additional languages.
Throughout the challenge individual student’s reading achievements will be celebrated. Each student that completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement that will be mailed to schools in October. Those students that do not complete the challenge will have their reading achievements rewarded with a Certificate of Participation.
Our school librarian, Mrs Cameron, has entered each class into the challenge, and students have individual reading record forms. Encourage your child to take part, and if you have read to them, remember to add those books to their reading record.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Cameron on 4774 0477.
At Good Shepherd, we are lucky to have a modern, well-resourced Library, and it’s great to see so many students making use of it at break times.
Please also ensure your children are borrowing books during their class visit to the Library. Each student must have a library bag to borrow – a pillow slip, supermarket “green bag” or other cloth bag is sufficient. When your child brings a library book home, please take some time to read and discuss it with them. Once children can read fluently and independently, it’s tempting to leave them to it. However, being able to reflect on what has been read and discuss aspects of the text is an important skill throughout school.
Franki will be in the Library again this Friday, to read stories with students.
Come along at 1.10pm, give Franki a pat, and relax while listening to stories being read.

What's Happening in Our Year 6 Classes
In our Science unit this term, Year 6 are investigating how environmental factors affect the growth and development of living things. We began our research experiment this week to see what environmental factors have an effect on the growth of mould on slices of bread. We used several different samples including a control slice of bread and placed them in different places - in the dark, in the cold and in the outdoors. Over the next few weeks we will be measuring and recording the growth of mould every few days. This experiment is helping the students to test the hypothesis that different conditions will help or hinder the growth of mould. Make sure you check in with us in a few weeks to find out our results!!

Environmental Tips
The long term vision for Catholic Schools in the Townsville Diocese includes the following key principles:
• The natural world has value in itself and not merely for its use by humans.
• Earth belongs to God and is only on loan to humans who are called to care for it.
• Ecological education provides the background for wise and moral decisions.
The right to a safe ecological environment is a universal human right.
