From the Desk of the Principal

Thank you to Mrs Brennan and Mrs Hamilton for organising a special ANZAC Day commemoration for our school community on Friday. Thank you also to Warrant Officer Class 2 Lachlan Hamilton (Dani's Dad) and Warrant Officer Class 2 David Gorbal (Kloe's and Brianna's Dad) for joining us and being our special guest speakers as part of our service.

Also present at our ANZAC Day service was Lyn Toohey (Mackenzie's grandmother) and Shona Bolam. Lyn and Shona along with Wilma Brookhouse and Helen Maloney from the Queensland Country Women’s Association crocheted over 400 poppies for our students and staff. We greatly appreciate their kind donation - we all love them and wore them with pride on Friday and on ANZAC Day.

Thank you also to the students, staff and families who attended the ANZAC Day march on Sunday.

Just a reminder that next week is another short week with Monday being the Labour Day holiday. Enjoy the rest of your week and have a wonderful long weekend.

Good Shepherd Sunday

Sunday marked the fourth Sunday in the season of Easter. It is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday because the Gospel passage focused on Jesus referring to himself as the Good Shepherd…
“I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.”  (John 10:11)
As Good Shepherd Catholic School, this Gospel has a special resonance. Jesus is our good shepherd. We are the sheep called to follow him. He lay down his life for us for our salvation. Following him is the one true way to abundant life.

“Why do I have to?”
“How come she gets to do that?”
“Why can’t I?”
“It’s NOT FAIR!”
These are common complaints that parents are all too familiar with – and so are teachers! We often have queries from students and their families about differences within the classroom, and concerns that some students receive ‘special treatment’ or have different expectations. Within Good Shepherd, we work to ensure all students have what they need to achieve, experience success and reach their potential. This means students having access to different resources and being able to express their knowledge, and their needs, in different ways. We like to explain it like this:

What's Happening in Our Prep Classes

Prep A have been delighted and very interested in the range of creatures which have come into our classes to participate in one of our regular “Show and Share” sessions. We have seen glowing scorpions and orphaned macropods (wallabies). It has been fantastic to hear the many facts about these creatures and how to care for them. Next week we are participating in a Science incursion, where the event comes to us at school. The event is called “It’s Rocket Science” and the students will have the opportunity to construct and test rockets made from recycled items. We can’t wait!!

Prep B settled back into the class routine quickly and have been helping Mrs Sandy MacKinnon to settle into our classroom and Good Shepherd school. The students have been working hard on developing their number skills and naming shapes.  In Religion, students are learning about the goodness of God’s creation through a variety of experiences and in Science they are using their senses and oral language to describe how objects feel as they move towards identifying materials that are sun safe or waterproof. Mrs MacKinnon has also been teaching the class about emotions and feelings through Zones of Regulation.

Prep C have had a very settled return to school routines and learning. We are enjoying meeting new characters in InitiaLit and learning sounds and letters, as well as blending these sounds to make words. The class has enjoyed the beginning of our new Science unit about materials and the properties of these materials. We had fun feeling a variety of materials hidden in a bag and describing what they felt like. Students enjoy lessons with our Indigenous Education worker, Mrs Fuller, and have been using books to discuss culture and traditions. The students share the knowledge from the stories and their craft activity with the class after the lesson. There is a lot of interest so I am incorporating the craft activities into Fantastic Friday and our Indigenous students will assist their peers with the activities.

Environmental Tips

Prevention is better than cure.  Think about what you buy and how it is packaged.  Consider your own little practices and start picking up rubbish in your neighbourhood.
