Week 10 , Term 2
Wow! I can’t believe Term 2 is almost finished! Today we celebrated our students by acknowledging their academic achievement, academic endeavour, and commitment to following the GSCS Way at our Semester 1 Awards Ceremony. Congratulations to all students who were recognised today.
The rest of the term has also been eventful, with students taking part in a range of activities including the inaugural Spelling Bee, Speechmakers competition, Obe Geia football challenge on Palm Island, the cross country and field events. Still to come this week are our Athletics Carnival, Bill Nettle Cup and the NQ Netball Cup. Students have represented our school with respect, integrity, and good sportsmanship, and we are very proud of everyone who participated in these events.
As many of you already know, I am currently on long service leave visiting friends in the United States. During that visit, I hope to meet some of the students and staff from Our Lady School in Festus, Missouri, who some of our students were writing to last year. I will return at the beginning of Week 3 next term, with my first day back on Monday 22nd July.
New Principal Majella Lynch-Harlow will officially commence on 8th July, although I am sure she will be spending time at the school before then! She is excited to start and looking forward to meeting all our students and families. Make sure you say hello when you see her!
Enjoy your break from school, and I hope you have the opportunity to relax and spend time with loved ones over the next couple of weeks.

Curriculum News 👩🏫
As we conclude the first semester of schooling for 2024, I am delighted to inform you that the academic reports for Semester One have been released and are now accessible through our school Compass portal.
The information contained in this report is a summary of your child’s achievement to date. Reports are provided twice per year and are one of a number of ways that the school communicates your child’s achievement and approach to learning. Reporting provides an opportunity for students, families and teachers to maintain authentic learning conversations and partnerships.
I encourage parents to talk through the report with their child. This is an excellent opportunity to reflect on your child's progress and achievements so far this year.
When reading the reports, here are a few tips to help you make the most of this information:
1. Celebrate Successes: Start by acknowledging and celebrating your child's achievements. Highlight their hard work and dedication in subjects where they have excelled.
2. Identify Areas for Growth: Look for subjects or skills that need improvement. This is a chance to set goals and discuss strategies with your child to address these areas.
3. Understand Teacher Comments: Pay close attention to the comments made by teachers. They provide valuable insights into your child's behaviour, participation, and attitude towards learning.
4. Set Realistic Goals: Work with your child to set achievable goals for the next semester. This could include improving grades, enhancing study habits, or participating more actively in class.
5. Encourage Open Communication: Maintain an open line of communication with your child's teachers. If you have any questions or need further clarification on the report, do not hesitate to reach out.
6. Support and Encourage: Provide continuous support and encouragement. Your involvement and positive reinforcement play a significant role in your child's educational journey.
These questions could also be used to guide these conversations.
- What are you most proud of?
- In what way were you able to use your character strengths in your learning?
- Which of the teacher comments do you appreciate/value the most?
- What might be a goal for the remainder of the year?
We are proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students and are committed to supporting their growth and development. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Sports News ⚽️ 🏀 🏈 ⚾️ 🎾 🏐 🏉 🎱
This Friday, a number of our Year 5 and Year 6 students will be representing our school in rugby league and netball at two popular annual events on the NQ school sporting calendar. The Bill Nettle Rugby League Cup Challenge will see 24 teams from across Townsville and Bowen compete at Jack Manski Oval, while the NQ Netball Cup will take place at Murray Sporting Complex.
We wish all our competitors the best of luck on the day and know they will represent our school with pride and good sportsmanship, while walking away with wonderful memories, friendships and skills.

WORLD REFUGEE DAY – THURSDAY 20TH JUNE
Each year on 20 June, the world celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
Refugees are vulnerable and in need, and are often misunderstood and maligned, and often have very little or nothing of their possessions and little food, they often must leave their homes with nothing or with what they can carry. They suffer cold, hunger, trauma, despair, disease, violence, and loss. The awareness day is to help public understanding of refugees as well as raising support and help.
Across the world, agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, work tirelessly to help refugees, but with people being made refugees daily, more help and awareness is constantly needed, to ensure that refugees are treated fairly and provided for, rather than being neglected or shunned, and there are projects to re-settle and provide for refugees. So World Refugee Day highlights all of this.

Environmental Tips
Trees help to filter water, combat salinity, clean the air and increase flows into water catchments. They also provide food and shelter to Australia's unique wildlife and are an integral part of our country’s biodiversity. So, get your hands dirty and get involved in helping our environment. |
