What a great start we have had to Term 3! Students returned to school refreshed and ready to learn, and we have already seen some outstanding efforts in the classroom.
Today we celebrated our inaugural Deadly Day Out, with a fantastic range of activities for students and their families to participate in. I am sure you will agree that the organising committee put together an event to be proud of. Thank you to our wonderful stall holders and supporters, who provided an opportunity for all in our school community to share Indigenous cultural experiences. It was a truly uniting day for everyone, and your enthusiastic participation is appreciated. Keep an eye on Facebook for photos of the day.
Reminder: supervision at school starts at 8.10am. Any students arriving to school before this time
are expected to attend OSHC or sit in the Shed with a responsible adult. We understand that parents
have to get to work or other commitments, however it is NOT acceptable to drop your child at
school before 8.10am and assume that siblings, friends, or other parents will supervise them. Thank you for adhering to this rule, which is in place for your child’s safety and wellbeing.
Newsletter changes: As advised on Facebook and by email to parents, our newsletter is changing andwill now be a fortnightly publication on the “even weeks” of the term. You will receive a year level update from your child’s teacher on the “odd weeks”. Award winners and birthdays for each week will be published on Facebook every Wednesday and will no longer be included in the newsletter.

Pope Francis has proclaimed the World Day of Prayer for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated on the 4th Sunday in July each year – July 23rd this year. It is marked near the feast of St Joachim and St Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
Let us pray this Sunday for our grandparents, whether they are with us or not. Let us also pray for the elderly in our society, especially those who feel lonely or are unwell.
Bless My Grandparents
Dear Lord
I pray that you watch over my grandparents.
Please bless them with your love.
May you keep them safe and guard their path and protect them from above.
I pray that they will always know and I can help them see,
just how much I love them and what they mean to me.
Amen
Catholic Education Week
23 – 29 July 2023
Catholic Education Week will be celebrated in Catholic schools in Queensland from 23 – 29 July 2022.
This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Communities of Faith, Hope and Love.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
There are 313 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 154,000 students and employ more than 22,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.
Our school is planning a number of activities during the week including our Catholic Education prayer reflection at Assembly on Friday 28th July.

Talofa lava parents, carers and students!
Term 3 is jam packed with lots of exciting events and experiences for our students. Strap in for the ride.
Mulkadee
It’s everyone’s favourite time of the year……Mulkadee Week!
This week, Ms Brown and 13 talented vocal students from GSCS are attending TCE’s Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre (TECC). In it’s 18th year, Mulkadee is a major event on Townsville's Arts calendar as well as an integral player in the Arts arena in our Catholic diocese, showcasing the talents of more than 850+ students from 31 Catholic schools in the disciplines of choir, stings, band, guitar, drama, dance and AV.
This year, Mulkadee 2023 will embark on the magical re-imagining of the classic tale, Robin Hood. We wish Ms Brown and our choir students ‘chookas’ for their sold out performance this Friday night at the TECC.
Challenge Games
Next week, a team of more than 30 students along with Mrs Hocking, Mrs De Daunton and Mrs Aili will attend the Challenge Games at Townsville Sports Reserve on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th July. The purpose of The Challenge Games is to provide two day of fun, friendship and participation in a range of sports and activities for school students who have a disability. These activities include running, jumping, throwing and team events, plus many other fun/novelty activities. We wish all competitors the best of luck.
Ned's Mindset Mission
NED’s Mindset Mission is a positive behaviour assembly visiting our school in Week 4 on Thursday 20th July. A world-class performer will take our students on a 45-minute journey filled with storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humour.
NED’s message and memorable friends inspire students, promote academic achievement, and support our school goals. NED will become a positive role model at both school and at home.
Never give up Encourage others Do your best®
A yo-yo is both a mindset tool and tangible reminder of NED’s message. While learning to yo-yo, children will make mistakes, try again, & improve. Read more at www.MindsetMission.com/yoyos.
An email will be sent home next week about this exciting school visit including information on how to purchase yo-yos.
Have a wonderful fortnight ahead and please come and say talofa or hello when you see me around!

What's Happening In Year 1
Last term, Year 1 learnt all about narrative writing. We identified the text structure of narratives - setting, characters, problems and solutions. This enabled students to use their imaginations to create their own narratives. After creating their own books, we then practised our typing skills by turning these into a google doc! We were so proud of our stories that we visited our Grade 3 PALs to read them together. Have a look below at our amazing work.
This term we will be exploring information reports. This will link with our science unit where we are investigating minibeasts. Through a variety of learning experiences we will be learning to write our own information reports about a chosen minibeast. In Week 4 we are going on an excursion to the museum to visit the tropical rainforest exhibit to explore minibeast habitats. After the museum we will be walking along The Strand to view the artworks displayed in The Strand Ephemera. Students will be collecting ideas for our upcoming Year 1 Art Show at the end of term. Stay tuned!
What's Happening in Deadly Learners
It's hard to believe that the time has officially arrived and we are celebrating NAIDOC Week for 2023. During our Deadly sessions classes have unpacked this year's theme 'For Our Elders' and what it means to be recognised as an Elder. We explored terms such as 'Old People, Senior Woman/Senior Man, Aunty/Uncle and Matriarch' and how they are used by First Nations people and communities. A special shout out to the following students who assisted at our Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday; Pryden, James, Joeviah, Lucas, Desmond, Leiani, Cynthia, Reece, Hudson, Charlee, Caiarn, Amber, Willow and Warlu who all did an amazing job in their rolls. Thank you to our very Deadly parent helpers Peta, Gabe and Tony and the wonderful Arika Appleby for her lovely Acknowledgement of Country.
We hope all students have had a wonderful day at our first ever Deadly Day Out today and we thank all the parents, friends and Elders who were able to join us today. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page for photos of today's inaugural event.
