From the Desk of the Acting Principal

Congratulations to all our award winders from today’s Semester 1 Academic Awards. It is fantastic to see so many students achieving highly, but it is just as important to recognise those students who
put in a consistent effort with their schoolwork and behaviour. Only one student from each class can receive an award, but there are many who strive for excellence every day, and we are proud of all of you!
With the end of Term 2 just a couple of days away, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe two-week break. Even if you must continue to work through the school holidays, I hope you still get the chance to relax a little, spend some quality time with your wonderful children and loved ones, and recharge for the second half of the school year.
See you in Term 3!

A Parent’s Prayer

Loving God,
You are the giver of all we possess,
the source of all of our blessings.
We thank and praise you.

Thank you for the gift of our children.

Help us to set boundaries for them,
and yet encourage them to explore.
Give us the strength and courage to treat
each day as a fresh start.

May our children come to know you, the one true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

May your Holy Spirit help them to grow
in faith, hope, and love,
so they may know peace, truth, and goodness.

May their ears hear your voice.
May their eyes see your presence in all things.
May their lips proclaim your word.
May their hearts be your dwelling place.
May their hands do works of charity.
May their feet walk in the way of Jesus Christ,
your Son and our Lord.
Amen.

Talofa lava parents, carers and students!

As Semester One comes to a close I would like to wish all students, families and staff a safe and happy holiday period full of rest and opportunities for family connection.
Here are some helpful tips from Child’s Play Vic on maintaining a routine during the holiday period:
Why should we continue to practice our routine?
Practising a routine is just as important during the holidays as it is during term time. A routine helps your child meet and reach developmental milestones and provides stability and normality to your child’s life.  This assists in helping them to feel comfortable and safe and not stressed or fearful. Keeping a routine over the holidays also reduces the likelihood of your child burning out or having a temper tantrum.
What can we do to keep a routine?
Hint 1. Plan with your child
Planning with your child makes them feel included and helps them understand what is going on.
Hint 2. Maintain regular sleeping patterns
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of a child’s development. Over the holiday period, maintaining that bedtime routine is critical as your child needs time to wind down and a bedtime routine provides them with a sense of comfort and normality. Maintaining a bedtime routine will also prevent your child from experiencing overtiredness and you having to deal with the after effects.
Hint 3. Set a screen time limit
It’s natural that your child may be exposed to more screens while at home for an extended period, but it is incredibly important that we don’t let our children spend all day watching TV or playing on an iPad. Set time limits on screen time and ensure there are opportunities for outdoor play away from a screen.
Hint 4. Have consistent eating habits
By maintaining routine eating habits and providing similar breakfasts and lunches every day, your child is less likely to indulge heavily in tempting treats. Keeping a routine and eating healthy meals also promotes the idea that foods such as a piece of cake or a piece of pizza are a treat and are something to be treasured.
Don’t forget… Remember to play and have fun
Holidays provide a great opportunity to connect as a family, play and have fun. Enjoy your time together and remember to play and have fun every now and then.
Tofa and have a wonderful break!

What's Happening In Year 6

Year 6 students worked hard throughout the past few weeks completing assessments. Many of our students have been off playing in sports competitions, representing Good Shepherd in Futsal, Basketball, Rugby League and Netball.
We are also very proud of our Readers Comp team, which competed last week and came 4th out of 35 primary schools in North Queensland.
Over the past couple of weeks we have been focusing on mindfulness, completing a range of different art activities.

Motor Vehicles
Motor vehicles are the single greatest source of air pollution in cities. Reduce air pollution and save petrol money by :
•    Driving smoothing instead of braking at high speed.
•    Ensure tyres are filled to the maximum air pressure.
•    Have your car serviced regularly.
•    Try to carpool with someone
