From the Desk of the Acting Principal
It was great to see parents supporting students at last week’s Field Events, and I am sure there will be many more at our annual Athletics Carnival this Friday, cheering on all students and encouraging
good sportsmanship.
When parents are gathered together, there is often the urge to “get involved” in what other students are doing. I would like to remind all parents and carers, that we do have Code of Conduct for Parents and Volunteers which contains a number of stipulations around your
rights and responsibilities in the school setting.
Key points under Parent/guardian/caregiver/volunteer responsibilities are:
Under no circumstances approach another child whilst in the care of the school to address,
discuss or chastise them because of actions towards your own child
As valued members of the school community, attend and participate appropriately in school
liturgies or special events including sporting carnivals, interschool sport, academic and
cultural events.
Parents should also be mindful not to discuss issues they may have with another parent within
possible hearing distance of students. This can cause unnecessary upset for children.
Parents accept this Code of Conduct when signing and accepting the school’s policies in the
Enrolment Application Form and by the act of accepting enrolment at a systemic Townsville Catholic School.
We look forward to everyone participating in the Athletics Carnival in a positive, supportive manner that ensures that our students have an enjoyable, fun day.

Sacred Heart of Jesus
Friday following the Second Sunday after Pentecost Solemnity
Liturgical Color: White
Behold the heart which drips red for love of man
This is a moveable feast that honors the Sacred Heart. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque had a series of visions over a period of 18 months between 1673 and 1675. In one of her visions, on June 16 1675, Jesus asked her to request that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated on the Friday after the octave of the Feast of Corpus Christi, 19 days after Pentecost.
In 1856 Pope Pius IX confirmed that the Feast of the Sacred Heart would become mandatory for the whole of the Catholic Church, to be celebrated on the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi, as requested by Jesus in Saint Mary’s vision. The ranking of the Feast of the Sacred Heart grew in importance over the coming years to become one of the most important Feast days in the liturgical calendar.
St. John Paul II, a great devotee of the Sacred Heart, said, “This feast reminds us of the mystery of the love of God for the people of all times.” In 2023, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday June 16.

Talofa lava parents, carers and students!
As Term 2 draws to a close, I would like to acknowledge all the hard work completed by our students and staff this semester. Over the past few weeks, students have been busy completing assessment tasks and teachers have spent numerous hours marking and moderating assessment to inform Semester One reporting results.
Semester One Academic Reports will be released on the Compass Parent Portal next Tuesday 20th June. You will receive an email to notify you when these are ready for viewing.
Reading your child’s Semester One Report
Student reports bring mixed feelings for parents. Pleasure and pride if children are performing well but considerable angst when children are not progressing as hoped. Reports can mean anxious times for children too. ‘Will my parents be disappointed or proud?’. This is the main concern of most children. Children of all ages take their cues from their parents, so your reaction to their school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people.
Parenting expert Michael Grose (2011, parentingideas.com.au) suggests before you open your child’s report, do a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind and consider the following:
1. Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in line with their ability?
Pitch your expectations in line with your child’s abilities.
2. Do you believe that children learn at different rates?
Avoid comparing your child to siblings, your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child. Instead look for individual progress.
3. Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it?
Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as possible.
School reports come in different formats. Regardless of the format, school reports should provide you with an idea of your child’s progress in all subject areas, their attitude, effort and their social development.
Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report:
1. Focus on strengths. Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning.
2. Broaden your focus away from only looking at academic performance and also look at how your child gets along with his or her peers as well as their skills in the areas of independence and co-operation which are highly valued.
3. Take note of student self-assessment. Children are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress.
4. Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement.
It’s important to remember to be supportive, consider the personality of your child and focus on their progress.
Together, we can recognise and celebrate your child’s effort and growth and continue to work together to support them in areas that need developing.
Have a wonderful week ahead and please come and say talofa or hello when you see me around!

What's Happening In Year 3
This Term in Year 3 we have looked at different techniques that help us to create art pieces. We used different materials to create our artworks, including paint, coloured pencils and oil pastels. We gained inspiration from Andy Warhol to create some flowers. We also worked on creating some self-portraits of ourselves. Most students opted to work with oil pastels but some also used coloured pencils. We can’t wait to further develop our knowledge of art techniques next Term.
