From the Desk of the Principal
It is lovely to be back at school after attending Principal Meetings on Monday and Tuesday.
Monday was International Women's Day and we are so blessed to have so many amazing women in our Good Shepherd Family. I was fortunate enough to attend an International Women's Day Breakfast on Friday at Ignatius Park Hall and our Deadly Team attended a Morning Tea on Monday at the PCYC.
Thank you to Mrs Feaver and her Environment Committee for organising our school clean up ahead of Clean Up Australia Day. Our students did a wonderful job cleaning up around school.
Next week sees us open our doors to the future students and family members of Good Shepherd as we celebrate Under 8s Day on Tuesday. I recognise that we have students in Years 2 and 3 that are still Under 8 but unfortunately due to the large number of Prep and Year 1 students as well as the attendance of eight local kindergartens, our space is too small to also invite these older students. I have taken your feedback on board and will rebrand the event to Under 6s from 2022. I am confident our students attending will have a wonderful time and I look forward to seeing the many costumes of what they are going to be when they grow up.
Enjoy the rest of your week

Sacramental Program
Congratulations to the students who participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation last week. Both evenings went very well and Fr Dave and Fr Clement praised the children's efforts. The program continues with students attending sessions to prepare for receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their journey.
Project Compassion
We are now in the third week of Lent with the Project Compassion story of Oliva, a 22-year-old woman from Tanzania. She did not have the opportunity to go to school and was embarrassed that she was unable to read, write or count. As an adult, her business was losing money because she couldn’t add up her money and give the right change to customers.
Then Oliva enrolled in Caritas Australia’s literacy and numeracy classes. She also set up a home classroom to teach her neighbours, for free, because they were too shy to attend larger classes.
Oliva has now graduated, attendance at her classes are growing, her kiosk is thriving and she is helping her children with their homework. She aims to become a pastor and run for leadership in the next local election - to help her community to ‘Be More.’ Watch a short film about Oliva’s story here.
• Approximately 260 million children don’t have the chance to go to school (un.org)
Aspire not to have more, but to be more. (St Oscar Romero)
Please remember that your child/children can return their Project Compassion boxes anytime before the end of this term.
This Lent our fundraising for Project Compassion will go towards assisting Caritas to provide decent housing, schools and hospitals in Bangladesh.

We all have mornings when things don’t go right – someone can’t find their shoes, the cat throws up behind the couch, or someone just can’t get out of bed on time – and we end up running late.
But when running late becomes a regular occurrence, it can have a negative impact on your child’s learning. Studies have shown that children learn best at the start of the day, when they are well rested, have had breakfast and arrive on time. Being just 10 minutes late every day adds up to nearly an hour a week of lost learning. Over a year this adds up to more than one week of missed school! Over 13 years of education, from Prep to Year 12, that 10 minutes a day adds up to nearly half a year of missed schooling.
Being late for class can mean important instructions and learning opportunities are missed and the class is interrupted. Your child may feel uncomfortable and on the outer with peers. Children need to arrive on time ready to settle into their school work.
At Good Shepherd, students are supervised from 8:10am, so arriving around that time allows children the opportunity to socialise with their friends, and prepare for a busy day of learning. Being at school on time also means students hear important morning announcements, such as what lunchtime clubs they can attend, and any changes to the daily routine. The skills developed through attending school regularly and arriving on time, also helps students build the skills and capabilities needed for success in other areas of life.
Support your child’s learning by helping ensure they are at school on time. Every minute counts!

What's Happening in Our Year 6 Classes
Year 6 Leaders at the Swimming Carnival
On Wednesday 24th February, the Year 6 leaders, along with students from Year 3, 4 & 5 participated in the school swimming carnival. This was the first big opportunity for our Year 6 students to showcase their leadership skills and support their house teams in this fantastic event. Prior to the day, the leaders had come together to organise their team chants and posters. On the day of the carnival, they stepped out in front of the crowd and led their team chants, encouraging all the swimmers to do their best. It was such an exciting day and great to see our leaders shine!
Learning in Maths
Year 6 students have been exploring how to use protractors this week in Maths as we investigate angles. The students have had fun trying out a new piece of equipment to help them measure the degrees of different angles and record these. The trickiest part, according to most students, is figuring out which side of the protractor to measure from and also reading the angles accurately as the lines are quite small! They have been doing a fantastic job and will continue to build on their learning and mathematical understanding as we continue on throughout the term.
